    Poof!!

The pictures pretty much say it all. I brought the boat in after running maybe 2.5 minutes because it must have hit something. One of three blades was missing off a x337. I then put on a very mild prop m440 which should pull about 6o to 70 amps based on past readings. The ESC was cool to the touch, the motor was at about 125. I hit the throttle, made a turn and hit the straight and noticed it was going much slower then poof. Dead. Then smoke!

Not sure why the ESC failed (Castle 120hv), possibly because it has had a hard life and I think I am on my third summer with it. The damage though is quite complete. chuckle. I will be selling the motor and hardware in the near future. The motor is practically brand new, I have been using it for about 4 days now.

Is that a Feigao 580L? If so, check to se if it de-magged. I had one randomly de-mag on the first run for no reason. It did get warrantied. That could make the esc poof!

no, i bought it new. I used it for about 2 minutes before it de-magged. Electric, the shaft will spin pretty freely if demagged, at least mine did.

That one you told me came from the Rumrunner Swap shop? You did say it was new in the box. But who knows what was done with it. Its very unlikely a motor will run well for 2 minutes than demag for no reason. Unless the magnets are junk/demaged from the start. Usually resulting in a very hot motor, realy quickly.

Steven, I bought this motor from you a few weeks ago, but no worries not looking for a warranty or anything. I will assume it is something I did which is more likely than not. I did notice that the motor was heating up quite a bit before the incident occurred which surprised me since I had it propped down? Maybe that was a sign. I guess I need to figure out first whether the motor is good or not before I risk another esc with it. Frankly, the boat is so toasted I am trying to figure out whether to just start over or not.

                      Larry,
running 8s 5000mah 40c, 12 580, Lipo, 33" DF knock off, x440 at time of explosion. I have a whole bunch of data from all the previous runs posted on this forum from a few days ago. I was measuring the amp draw, speed etc with various props. I did a few speed runs a day or two before and today I was just working on a mild prop and testing it out for any heat issues and seeing how much run time I could get.

First thing I see is the prop size is too small for the hull size and the weight (cells)
                          A 33 DF likes a larger prop
                          X447/3 blade or a X450/2 blade
For this you need a motor with lower KV.
Your motor is only rated for 1400 to 1800 Watts, which relates to 62 AMP MAX with 8S.
                          You are pushing 3500 Watts
You are using a 120HV and running a average 129Amp's
                          You should use a 240HV
You should always use a ESC rated almost twice the average AMP draw that you will run.

My "P"(4S) Mono (DF-33) set up for racing in my signature below runs faster then that in a straight line.
