LOVE the tunnel racing... People, if you aren't racing tunnels, WHY THE HECK NOT! It's the most fun you'll have racing boats!

By the way... it was sunny here in Washington over the weekend...

What a great piece of tape, Tony! I could write a book about that heat. In fact, here it is.

This is the 6th round of OPC. Man, look at that water. We had 9 drivers for OPC and based on point totals, I grouped the top 4 drivers in this final heat:

                            Points after 5 rounds:

Paul Winegarner (lead boat at the start-white/flourescent yellow VS 1) 1900 pts
David Newland ("Purple Passion" Cobra 20-nicknamed by CD Lenny Blake) 1525 pts
Dan Proulx (Custom Mike Zebrowski built Villian White/yellow/green) 1400?? pts
                            Pete Wijatek (VS-1 white/orange) 1325 pts?? I'll update Dan's & his pts as I'm guessing

Now-Paul just needed to get a finish to have a lock on 1st place...but the size of balls on that guy is pretty impressive. Look at his start. We're all there, but he's got the inside advantage and look at how that 1st lap ended. Impressive. He's not laying up! Also, notice how tight Dan and I were that 1st lap. There's really something kick ass about this hobby when you're racing your friend and you know each other well enough to have that kind of deck-to-deck race. I'm so glad Tony got this video...

OK-End of Lap 1-Paul still has the lead, with Dan in 2nd, me in 3rd and Pete in 4th. Also-Back to lap 1...notice how evenly matched the speeds are on these boats. Excellent OPC setups in action. It all boiled down to the start. For now...

Start of Lap 2-left side of the course...Paul stumbles and flips. Man, I could hear him sigh...Dan had to make an evasive manuever to not hit him, and I was able to clear before Dan and take 1st place in the back stretch. Fortunately in that instance, I was dealing with a brand new boat and I really was taking the turns conservatively.

Now, notice the point totals up top. Paul now has a DNF and if I take 1st place, I will tie him in points and the winner of the class will boil down to the fastest heat time (not sure who that is, actually). Can you believe that!! 6 rounds and it would come down to time. Woops, I'm getting ahead of myself. All this was going on in my head as I blasted down the backstretch. Calm down-finish the race, Newland. I wouldn't want to do something stupid and give up 2nd Place overall now would I.

Finishing lap 2, I take it a bit wide, let's say lane 4 and Pete dives inside to pass me. I may have come into lane 3 by the end of the turn, but Pete didn't hold his inside lane and we love-tapped. No harm-no foul, but I place 65% negligence on Pete, 35% on me. Just kidding. Dan regained his composure and started to chase us down.

Start of lap 3. I'm a happy camper. "Purple Passion" is flying. But there's something in the video worth paying attention to. Look at my boats ride attitude just before turn 3 and then right at the start of lap 4. See it lift a bit? More later...shortly.

Start of lap 4. Proulx is still in 3rd place but he's chasing down Pete. I still have the lead. Notice Pete's boat achieve lift off in the turn as he hit the buoy. Woops. Luckily he landed upright, but that was all Proulx needed to pass him and Pete was called for the penalty after the heat.

My small issue happened for me in the backstretch. Lawn Dart! Dang it...I ran that boat 5 rounds without any setup changes, then before the 6th round I lower the drive just a tad to tighten in up a bit, but it actually did the opposite. My boat was faster and looser in the 6th round than any other round...and I paid the price, sort of. My boat surfaced right-side up, but by then, Pete and Dan were long gone.

Lap 5: Dan has the lead, with Pete right behind him. I'm driving Miss Daisy with my Purple...boat in 3rd place.

Dan gets the heat win, and Paul gets the class win!

Man, what a video. OPC at it's finest.
