no kidding!! two years into my boating i was having my wife cycle my batteries while i was at work so i could run when i got home. One night i came across a 3-4 pg article from the lipo dr.?? on the internet .it scared me and put things into perspective. from then on i cycled my own batteries. i did it in the living room in the corner on a cookie sheet. later that next week i was in the back room with my wife and heard a swoosh.. and flash!! i immediately heard the flames and new it was a fire. i bolted into the living rm to find a 5-6 ft volcano of lithium !!! it took 4 pans of water (that's all i had) i now have fire ext. all over my house!! quarantined the kids rm w/ damp rolled up towels at door jams and went down stairs and threw on my respirator and by the time i got back up stairs 3-4 ft from the ceiling down was thick black smoke throughout the hole house!! anyways, my family escaped w/ out injury and considered it the best warning from above to have read that article and had this happen all within a week!!!thank you God. i had the fire Martial come out the next morning after running all my fans and the neighbors fans for 16 hrs and washed all the walls ..... it was deemed safe and said i did a better job than they would have at acting quickly.. i now only have a few splatter marks on the wall where the lithium left its mark. the next day a tig welded a stainless charging box and moved all the lipos into the garage . i also read the directions on the charger!! (stupid).. the reason for the fire was the battery was already charged and when put back on the charger it went through the first stage of charging which automatically puts in 1.2 volts( dummy stage).. woops!!! man what if my toddler was near by when that happened, could have deformed my own child because of a stupid mistake and not taking the necessary safety measures..Comment

I think my biggest comfort is knowing I spent $300.00 on a charger. I cringe when I hear about all of the $30.00 hong kong chargers out there. I have a ton of confidence in my Hyperion DuoII, I have made mistakes before while charging and the charger has picked them up right away.Comment

lipo bunker tests
I found a link to these videos of various bunker tests while sorting through the linked thread. These are worth watching.

Yes Lipo fires can and do happen scary stuff can be lurking in them batteries. This is another great example of why you Never Ever did I say Never! leave Lipo hooked up to anything unattended.

The video of the plastic sandbag cover over cinderblock has me sold so simple but yet so effective.

It worked for me.
This is a copy of my post a year ago on the RunRunner forum:
This ammo box contained a NiMh explosion. There were only two holes in the box, one for the heavy current cell cord and the other for the LiPo balancer. Each hole was about a half inch in diameter with a grommet sealing it. The grommets were blown out, but the case held. I was auto cycling a pack (charge/discharge). It blew on the fifth charge. This charger did not come with a temperature sensor to stop the carge on an over temperature condition.
What I learned from this:
1) Use an ammo box when charging or cycling.
2) Get a charger with a temperature sensor.Attached FilesLast edited by daveives; 03-02-2010, 09:00 AM.Comment

Sort of. At the NEAT Fair several years ago I was talking with a guy who had just put his plane back into his car after a short flight (battery wasn't fully discharged by any means).
The plane burst into flames - lucky for him he was right there and able to throw it onto the ground.
My guess is that something shorted out. The LiPo didn't burst into flames because it was upset at something.

Ty Andy I have some major size lipo's these days a handful of 6S 5000 mah packs these things are so big a small metal box as shown in the post would be no match for this size pack if one should start spewing hell fire lol...the thing is like most, these puppies have alot of charge in them even when not in use sometimes full charges for weeks before I have the chance to use them. So the concern to store at full capacity has me wanting to discharge them after watching that house burn down. = /Comment
