The USGS NEIC (national earthquake information center) shows 15-20 magnitude 5+ quakes off Chile in the last 15 hours. Something big is going on down there. Last big quake was in 1960.
No, the something big down there already happened. After shocks almost always follow earthquakes, especially big ones. They can continue for weeks. BTW magnitude 5 earthquakes are really nothing - I spent 27 years in Alaska and felt them up to 7.2. As a certified geologist it is interesting to observe them, but it is terrible that these natural disasters can cause so much human tragedy. At least you can see a hurricane coming......

It was a non event,we had bigger waves at boat club today LOL It was only a marine and beach warning, all they did was close the beaches on the east coast, So nothing really to panic about.
Don't shoot the messenger , although i dont suggest Ozzie - Crawl is biblical ( although i am sure he will be remembered for his humanity ) , he seems to be in a similar prediciment as Noah when he informed people of an impending fllood !! ...

I live in Southern California, earthquakes are a daily thing here... not always noticeable though. the biggest one I went through was a 5.0 and the building I was living at the time started twisting and moving (rollers)... not a pleasant feeling when you are 4 stories from the floor, I can't even imagine going through something stronger since the earthquakes grow exponentially as the numbers get higher on the Richter Scale.
The last big one in Chile (the 1960 one) hit so hard that part of a coastal city went under water for good... apparently the tectonic plate under the area was rising over the years and exposed that particular part of the country and when the plate settled again to it's "original" place things went under water... pretty powerful stuff.

This tread reminds me , back in 2000-04 i lived & worked in Koahsiung Southern Taiwan . Taiwan is an island continent that is constantly suffering tremors , Living on the 11th floor of an apartment building i use to be rocked to sleep by tremors & woken by a TW Army Herokoi ( wrong spelling ) Helicopter at 8 a.m sharp every morning at about 200 metres out , which i had a good view of out my sliding doors as it went on it's early morning patrol .
