Styrene is the best...HIPS (high impact)
ABS is fine but depending on what you are making it is more rubbery.
There are a few others but the HIPS is great for vac forming when using thicker sizes...like .60 or .80
If I get my styrene in on Monday I have something that I think you all might like for additional cooling on your motors -
:) your the best jeff!!! I knew you could clarify. Can i strengthen the entir hull ( inside) w/ cf? Should i use poly or epoxy? Also can syreen take a hot layup w/out distorting. WHATCHA GOT FOR US :)Comment

Sure you can. Epoxy only gets slighty warm unless you use many layers at once. I would be careful with poly and probably on use epoxy.
I like to spray the inside the hull with any kind of spray adhesive and then lay in the FG or CF....if you get a wrinkle you can pull it up and lay it back down. Then just wet it out and then roll excess with some poop paper or paper towles. Lay and extra layer on the bottom of the hull if you want to make it really rigid. Also for clean cuts on the FG or CF cloth use the adhesive or hair spray and then you can cut it easliy without all the crap stringing out on you.
Some use thin CA with FG cloth and it soaks right in and makes it very stiff.
Nothing wrong with styrene hulls but what you can do to make them faster is make the edges sharp where water exits...ends of sponsons, end of transom such as V hulls, cats, etc. The flex these new FG hulls have is not good but what makes them faster...the sharp edges do.
I have seen HIPS hulls take much more abuse than FG. I ran one into a dock iron at about 30 mph and just bounced off...had it been a FG hull it would have really taken it out.
You will see my latest brain fart soon. :) a clue .... A motor builds heat inside...keeping the windings cool with water cans is fine but there is more that can be done.Comment

Thanks jeff, good to know! I dont use glue, will i be ok just treating the syreen as if its fg? Csuff it up in all directions and lay it all down.... I use realy sharp scissors to cut and trim my cf. But have tried the ca. Causes some discoloration i didnt like. I take my time and roll everthing all out, but if i can do a hotter batch without warping the syreen it makes it easier to lay the cf up and down and all around:)( i like hot batches) I LIKE BRain fartsComment

I takes a 200 degree plus for a while to begin doing anything to the styrene. You will be fine and scuffing it is even better.
I usue a razor roller wheel for cutting that stuff. Works great...walmart special in the crafts section....or good sewing cloth sizzors is good.
shoot some pics!Comment

i will jeff, i have a hull coming in the mail as we speak and will do a build thread probably starting this week providing the hardware arives and hull soon :) it will be my first syreen hull. great info jeff!!! by the way i found that sleev retainer glue worked flawlessly with your struts even pushing my 12 lb maritimo at almost 70 mph. thanks jeff!Comment
