I am considering getting a Neu motor for my Jolly Cat. Which motor would be best for running on 4s LiPos. Can the Hydra run it since it is a 4 pole motor

The Schulze and Hextronics controllers have problems with 4 or 6 pole motors. Some brands of older controllers, with "out of date" revisions of software, had problems. Have not read about any with the new Hydras.
"Cogging" The controller does not stay in sync with the rotor at lower rpm's. The motor runs and sounds real ruff, but smooths out at higher rpms. This can damage the controller, due to high current.Last edited by ReddyWatts; 08-05-2007, 09:46 AM.ReddyWatts fleet photo

Doug Smock is running a Neu 1515/1Y with a Barracuda 125 on 4s LiPos. See here. He says he has no problems. I'm planning to copy his setup, but use the Hydra 120. I hope it works.
Cogging with Neu/Castle combos is certainly a problem in the car community. But I'm guessing the lower resistance of the water at low RPMs means it isn't for boats.Revolt 30, River Jet, Southampton Tug, Outcast 6S BLX, 8ight-E, Ten-SCBE, 22 2.0.

All Neu motors run fine on the BARA125s and Hydras as long as they have the latest software. The MGM controllers run them great as well. If you have the "D" wind Neu versions, then some of the Schulze and BK controllers will not work.
Most ESCs don't care how many poles a motor has. Some cheaper ESCs with limited switching will be rpm-limited with 4-pole motors - they will only deliver half the rpm of a 2-pole motor. It is the very low resistance and impedence of the Neu motors (the very characteristics that make them so powerful and efficient) that makes it difficult for some ESCs to read the rotor position, hence the cogging.

I ran into an unusual problem with a Neu D wind motor and a Shultz 40-160 controller last year before the Dec. SAWs..
When I first set up the boat the control armed with no problem. I took it out for it's first run and the control wouldn't arm.
The toubleshooting in the manual said low voltage. I knew this wasn't the case, and my wireing was well within limits. After checking and re checking everything, I stumbled across the fact that the control wasn't seeing the motor. I could (can) move the rotor one "click" in either direction, and the control would (will) arm every time without fail.

Speaking of these Nue motors, I thought steve was gonna start selling them. they are def. pricy and hard to figure out. Mr. Fuller suggested a motor for me but he didnt even have that turn on his web page but he said he had them in stock. HOW CONFUSING!Comment

Guys, the motors were designed by Steve NEU (not Nue). Kinda like calling the owner of this site Steve Varraco.....
BTW they are great motors. Are they the best motors out there? My question would be, best for what? I have used them to set a number of SAW records, and like them in some of my oval boats. For general sport running, they have great efficiency, will give longer run times and often don't need water cooling...but on a pure $/performance basis there are better choices. The Neus are the Cadillacs of performance motors and they are made in the USA.
