Well John you have some interesting points. But what it all boils down to is that so far the best way to cool a motor is from a water can or coil. It does not really matter where the heat comes from if you can't get to the source it's produced to cool it. The heat is transferred through the motor and the water scrubs off some of the heat. Until we come up with new technology with motors and cooling systems this is what works. This is why everybody that has a FE boat has some kind of water cooling.

Forgive me for what may sound like a ridiculous idea, but keeping in mind the valid point that John makes that most of the efficiency-reducing heat comes from inside the motor, and can/endbell cooling is marginally effective, would it be feasible to run cooling water [ or some other cooling liquid] THROUGH the motor ?
Apparantly, brushed and brushless motors have been run underwater. My OPC tunnel has been dunked numerous times & still runs fine. I've even considered routing the cooling jacket outflow to the top of the motor on the OPC and let it flow through. I have no heat problems with that setup so I haven't tried it, but maybe I'll give it a try [ after the next race]. Just a thought

Here is a picture of end plate mod's I did to one of my Keda's. The motor is sitting in a moddified tranny and a custom mount for a TC31. Notice the 3/8" holes on each end and the water cooling jacket.

Do you run a fan at all?

Just on the speedo. But it moves enough volume of air to get the circulation going inside the hull. If I was still using the KB motors I might consider putting a fan on the end but I have converted the bulk of my fleet to NEU's and they just dont get hot. With or without water cooling. Most of you guys know how effecient they are.

Boy, did I ever stir the pot!
Although I'm not completely convinced that cooling the case does little or nothing--(I would argue that the shaft and rotor transfers heat to the case by radiation as well as through the bearings), I do agree and see the wisdom that cooling holes are nessecary in the endcaps and they will be added. Anytime you cool anything the ambient air around it's temperature is reduced, which will add extra cooling to the circulated air around the rotor. It's a shame that these motors don't have a built in internal fan on the rear of the motor to circulate air, but clearly they would be worthless without cooling holes. Thanks for all the comments and advice.
