Jim, in most cases the important dimension is the end-play between the motor collett, the shaft, and the prop driveshaft. I've always had to shorten the motor shaft to get the right fit and allow for some endplay. Just how much shortening may vary depending on the motor-to-lower unit adaptor being used.

I would assume you would want the motor as low as possible? So yo might end up shortening the cable?
sorry I am a tunnel hull dummy
I admit it I am a hydro geek

The cables that are sold ready-made are square at both ends and can only be shortened very little so that they stay mated into the motor collett and propshaft. I have seen some builders like Dave Newland and Mike L ( who has the Shaman build thread) use Octura couplers on the motor which allow trimming the square end off the motor end of the shaft. They made their own spacers to fit. In all cases, the lower the motor, the better, of course.
