My scale boat club deems FE as anything over 10mph. Egneg's Xzess II is considered HFSE!

A little off topic I know but the other day I put an old 4s 25c pack in my DF 33 and it was running at 80 kph an hour and I had a ball with it. You can bet that pack is going with me every time I take that boat to the lake from now on.
You mentioned cheap batteries. I run Zippy Flightmax 5s 30c in my DF 33 and you have seen the videos. Cheap battery and lots of speed.
yea i have had zippys for acouple of years first the rhino then some flight max.
when the turnigy first come out i grabbed a set to try, there is a noticable diffrence between the flightmax and the turnigy both 30c 5000 packs but the turnigy has that bit extra.
would be good to hear of peoples first FE boats.
mine was a supremacy (not sure if spelling is the same)f1 tunnell hull.
the proboat outboard think ep1 had just been released and was mounted on.
i lived in the middle of the bush no tv or internet and had no idea on boats just acouple of boat magazines.i ran it on 12-14 cells nimh and a graupner 600 or there abouts. also had acouple of 10 turn modded motors i brought of a guy with about 10-12 rotors, lol ran these on 12 cells as well,i would get one run per rotor then take it in to work and cut the com and a new set of brushess.

If it gets on plane, is eazy to drive and had enough run time for you to think... man that was fun.

My take : If you need a GPS to tell how fast it's going, it's FE. If you need a calendar, it's not !

My introduction to FE was a Kyosho Hurricane. It had the twin LeMans 360 ST's geared 2:1, mech speed control, and twin 3300 6 cell nimh packs in Parallel. I had not seen another RC boat except for the ones in the toy store. I really thought I was something with a boat that did 20 - 25 mph! Then I met Diego and dirty and was introduced to brushless and the hurricane wasn't quite so fast anymore.

When you pull the trigger, the boat jumps on plane, and you can't seem to wipe that damn smirk off your face.

Maybe when you run with the fuel guys and get to start making fun of them by pulling an imaginary pull cord and make motorboat sounds till it "starts". "vrom vroooomm vrooooooommmmmmmm VRRROOOOOOMMMMMMM ok guys we can go now".

As Fluid said, if it fully planes, it's FE. Or you can say, if it runs faster than you, It's FE.
