I've built 2 VS1 and 1 Cobra. I haven't run the Cobra yet 'cause the lake is frozen. Personally, I think the servo should be mounted in the back because the CG on the VS1 is very critical; and the speed controller needs to be as far back as you can get it in the boat. My servo mount is held in with two 6/32 buttonhead screws. The mount is made out of 1/8" aluminum angle. I cut a slot for the servo, and mounted it to the side of the radio box. The radio box ends up being only less that 14" long. I also cut the top of the boat open to mount the radio box down low. The box starts out about 3-1/2" high and slopes down to 1-1/2" in the front. I haven't weighed the Cobra yet, but the VS1 is ready to run and weighs exactly 5 lbs. (that's with the 4S 5000 pack). All of these boats are set up with the UL motors. I know on the VS1 that if the CG is too far forward, the boat will nose steer coming out of the corners. I would post pictures, but I have too many problems trying to do it.
I am running a VS-1 with stumble blocks and was wondering what CG location works best (if you have any recommendations).
When I did run the VS1, the CG was 8", and I ran the stub shaft at 3/16 above the sponson. The prop I like best is the ABC 42x55, backcut, detongued and the tips rounded. I now run the Cobra - for the money, you can't beat this boat and they're cheaper than a VS1. If you do order one, order it without the radio box (the box that comes with it won't work), and it'll save you $20.

Thanks for the setup tips...I'll check the CG and stub shaft position next. I'm running the Aquacraft 42x55 and it seems to be about right. Haven't done anything other than sharpened and balanced. I'm going to try a de-tongued X442...has a little more pitch.
The Cobra sounds interesting...where do you get the hull?

Tell me about the Cobra, and where do we buy them?
thanks

Cobras are made by a guy in Florida - Dan Hutchinson. He's on International Waters, look on the Outboard Forum. I know a couple weeks ago he had a special on - I think $125. I have 2 of them now, and these boats are fast.

Current setup is CG at 8 1/8" and stubshaft is 1/16" above sponsons...should I raise the drive to 3/16"? Right now it's a bit of a handful in rough water and wakes...does some crazy maneuvers! Even sub'd it for 5 seconds last weekend, but it popped right up and kept on truckin'...
I am getting frustrated with you bagging the Vision's ability to run as an FE tunnel. I am not starting any fights but I feel you need to point out the reson you had trouble. If the CoG is set right then you will have no trouble at all.
Set the CoG on a VS1 at 35+% and see how it goes...I am sure the Shaman will be the same.
Now, back to the Author, keep up the good work Cat-Boi
Cheers
Kris
Wow! That's 9.8 inches on the VS-1...I think it should be more like 8 inches...
The 2 Cobras I have are not flimsy at all! If you set the CG on a VS1 at 35 percent, that boat is gonna do nothing but nose-steer. The VS1 I had would also submarine in rough water. I think this is mainly due to the fact that most tunnels have a shallow angle of attack.
Greg's boat trounces the better VS-1's in our club. There may be one that is as fast, but he hasn't been at one of our races yet this year...that'll be a RACE though!
