    Will Non-Counter-Rotating (or same direction rotating ) work on twin set-up?

    Hi guys

    I'm thinking of doing a twin brushless set up on a catamaran on a reasonable budget.

    Problem is that getting counter rotating drive system and props is hard, not to mention rare and expensive..... Not interested in that option at this stage and will prefer a single setting instead if non counter rotating does not work

    Will same direction rotating prop on a catamaran work? Anybody out there have tried it?

    Not trying to set any speed record but more for the cool factor of twin and having good fun sport boating.....

    Thanks for your replies.

    Traxxas Villian motors have zero timing and therefor spin either way and they are cheap, 22 bucks and will take 16.8 volts. They are brushed

      Nope,you need different props for each side.Check OSE as Steve have some that may work depending your application.I just bought a set of 45mm carbon filled R & L props for a cat i have.
      And as bwells says,make sure to connect correctly the right side motor(if looking from behind/at the transom) in order for it to spin clockwise.Just swap the red+ and black- cables,................
      2 ways of setting your props rotation for different purposes;
      1)Props(looking from the back)this way equals speed,used the most.
      L=c/clockwise
      R=clockwise

      2)Props for better handling/stability
      L=clockwise
      R=c/clockwise

      Hope this helps,.............Albert/karfrik

        Ah Jerome - If you go brushless just swap the leads on the motor use Octura X442 L & R props and when you order the drive shafts and wire get left & right lay cables!

        If you go both the same direction you will be fighting torque steer and if they turn left forget turning right quickly!

        Depending on the Cat --- if you look from the back of the boat if the the props turn outward it will have a tendency to lift the stern ... on the other hand turning inward drives the stern down & lifts the bow!

        It would seem to me that inward would cause the boat to fly better and have less hull in the water but at what cost? Perhaps it becomes more flip happy!

        I'm not sure which is best ... test and test some more to see which works for your boat!

          Thanks all for the reply.

          At this stage my options are:

          1. Counter rotating twin
          2. Non counter rotating twin
          3. Single set up.

          This build being on a budget, the seller I am sourcing my hardware does not offer counter rotating set up.

          Thus my two realistic options are
          1. Non counter rotating twin
          2. Single set up.

          The catamaran is 29". What do you guys think I should do? Non counter rotating twin or single set up?

          How "bad" is the torque steer on a Non counter totating twin set up?

          Cheers

              +1 twin motors cost too much money to run, if ones goes bad you basicly have to but 2 more... i learned this from my old mini lst2... i finally said screw it and bought a brushless set up and ran with a single...

                  AArgh...... I'm torn between the 2 options

                  Common sense and you guys tells me to go single and somewhere deep inside myself I agree with you guys but my heart tells me to go twin....... for the sound of twin brushless motors screaming and the cool factor......

                  Won't be able to sleep too much tonight and still debating in my mind......

                    Relax,...its all about money and experience.If you feel you have enough experience in the rc boating field to make a twin motor built from zero happen and money is no object,then go for it.If this is your first build,then take it easy and take an easier approach to it,that being a single motor build.You can still make it as fast as a twin.
                    My point is,learn your way up,don`t get into something that can break/frustrate you down......and push you away from the hobby.
                    A twin motor build will cost twice compare to a single motor.Everything doubles$$; Motors,mounts,esc`s,outdrives/shafts,props etc etc .......
                    Consult it with your pillow and sleep well my friend,and take this from someone who still learning its way up................Albert

                      Twin is way cooler and they sound good to boot.

                      You can run the same direction. The new little Aquacraft cat is that way. Stay with smaller props. It may take a little rudder but over all you should not have big problems.

                      If you run wire drives you can stop messing with right and left cables. Then you only need to flip the motor wires and get some CF props

                      They are cheap enough now to throw even some L motors in there and run 3S each. Light and fast and smaller ESCs can be used.

                        I vote twin. If you can afford it, build it. Yes its more money, yes its more of a pain, but the end result has got to be worth it. I personally would not let the difficulty factor keep me from trying it. Im slowly gathering parts for my first twin build in a cat and cant wait to get it started.

                        Plus as Jeff said... 'Way cooler"

                          I like the way my Mean Machine sounds when it winds up as a single .... but my twin jolly is outrageous sounding!
