    esc's w/o bec question

Anyone here ever experiment with adding a bec to a esc using a 7805 chip - 5vdc regulator?

You could pull off the positive and negative on the battery side of the esc and tie the 5v output into the red receiver wire. It is all a common ground from what I have seen on cheaper ESC.

What would be the pitfalls of a system like this? Voltage spikes or noise?

Wondering what the results were of someone trying this.

    Thanks, Brian

One I can think of is that it only regulates to 1 amp. In some cases, you would need a heatsink.

      True

That is true, one amp only. But to run a small servo, the RC and ESC power, shouldn't take much. I have had a rc battleship and the three barrel depression servos would really suck some current at full load. But this should not be the case with a small servo. I will have to set up a rig and check the current draw out.

You can get larger power sources, but the require external resistors and capacitors. Just more stuff to wire in!

For a heat sink, it would be mounted on the ESC heat sink which would be water cooled.

        experiment in progress

Well, i will be trying this. If it works I will post results in a new thread. I am taking a cheap speed control, water cooling it, adding a BEC and sealing it in epoxy. The last coat is curing now, should be able to test it the start of this week. Of course, an eagle tree data recorder would help, but this is more seat of the pants stuff for now.

Not for racing, spend your money on the good stuff. This is more for fun and sport running.

          Brian.
Scroll down on this link & there is a bit of a schematic.

But you can buy one of these for $5.50 plus a bit of postage.

I always use a UBEC when the ESC doesn't have a BEC in it.
          Cheers.

            it worked

OK, kinda old, but thought I would post my results.

i bought the Hobbyking SS speed controls that did not have the BEC option. I added the water cooling plate, then i attached the 7805 chip (radio shack) to the cooling plate so it has a heat sink. + to +, - to -, and the 5v lead tied into the servo power wire.

works great! I ran my HKSS 90 amp speed control in my mean machine. All told, about $35 including shipping, chip and cooling plate. Not bad for a water proofed and cooled 90 amp, 6s BEC brushless speed control!

I have also done this to the 40 amp model for about $15 each!
