Any ideas what i did wrong?!?!

well let me start off by saying that today totally sucked, i got my new mystery 120a esc in the mail after waiting about a month to get it, installed my deans connector as well as bullet connectors hooked everything up using 5s and within i say 30 sec. the motor starts smoking and about 5 sec. after that my esc started to smoke. I have no idea what i did wrong and what blows even more is that now im out a motor, and a esc. Any input would be great thnks...

its the proboat motor, i had it hooked up to a 3s 4000mah 20c, and a 2s 4000mah 20c in series and wen i hooked it up it just sputterd and started to smoke, i tried to give it throttle before i noticed the smoke but it did not respond

no it had about 10 solid runs on it what you think could have been the problem?

not know your complete setup makes it harder but the motor may have been damaged in the other runs, but being you plugged up a new esc that could be the problem as well
what hull and prop you running

For a good answer we will need a lot of info.
Hull, packs, prop, and esc as a minimum.
History of the setup is good too. Have any of the components been stressed before ?

I only ask these questions as I have logged all of the runs of my boats for the last 2 years and can easily say what got hot and when.
This is with the finger (for heat) data logger too.

The more information and data that you can provide will give you a more accurate answer to issues that you have with your boat.

                See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

yes more info, but sounds like wires got crossed? did you double check to see that polarity was correct? I have killed several speedos this way, never a motor.... What was it doing sitting there for 30 sec? Did the wires start to get hot? Maybe post a pic, if you haven't thrown the whole thing in the trash.

don't count the motor toast; I have revived my proboat motor many times by opening, cleaning and lubing it.

since it smoked even before you hit the throttle, I suspect faulty wiring/soldering, but again need more info. I assume this was a bench test?

this was in a blackjack hull that i was bench testing, i have fullers hardware with a x642, stock blackjack motor with a mystery 100a esc, and i had it hooked up to a venom 3s 4000mah, and a impulse 2s 4000mah both 20c i dont have pics of the esc due to me trashing it right a way cause it smelled like crap, but the motor wires did get supper hot and even started moving a little wen i had it hooked up to the batterys.

One possible problem, different batteries and a mistake in the in series hookup, and as others have mentioned a bad motor

The endbell screws off - I use a vise and channel lock pliers to convince it to come off. It always mars the can a tad, but better than tossing the motor. If you want, you could send it to me and I could see what service is possible (or just buy it from you if it is salvageable). But once you have the end bell off, the rotor pops out (being held in by the magnets). there are two bearings, front and back. Need to see if they survived. I then take the rotor in my drill and spin it inside some medium grit sandpaper until it is clean and smooth. then you clean the insides as well, spray some corrosionX in there and button her up. Good as new - that is as long as there is no damage.
