How many of you guys use these battery monitor, cutoff's etc? Are they absoloutely needed?

They are not absolutely necessary if you know exactly how long can you run without damaging the battery.
I'm not using any but I will, I recently purchase some Rhino Lipo's at HobbyCity and surprisingly I ended a long run having drawn 95% of the pack, the ESC cut-off would not trigger as it used to do simply because the battery voltage remains high even when almost empty!
LipoShield or CellShield from Dimensionengineering.com are the one I'm looking at.
