    BEC or UBEC?

I am getting an esc that has a 3v bec. Would that be enough to operate the electronics in the boat or should I get an esc that takes a ubec?

You want atleast 5v minimum bec. I use a seperate bec with all my esc.

I've got an 18 inch hydro that I want to put as little excess weight in as possible. So a UBEC should be in order then?

+1, I don' t like BEC I prefer a seperate power supply for ESC / power and receiver, that' s very clean, eliminate potential interference to the receiver through the ESC.

I can see where you are at with a 18" hydro.
With BL and Lipo weight is not as big an issue as it was when we ran Brushed and Ni cells.
Use a Rx pack and be confident that your Rx will get all the clean power that it needs.
I do. 5xAAA and 5xAA are my packs.
