    Snapped Cables

I used to run a K&B 0.21 and am planning to go electric with the REK lower. On my K&B I drilled two small holes in the side of the lower unit...one near the top and the other at the stub shaft. I used an epoxy syringe with a small tip to pump "blue" Prather marine grease through the shaft housing of the lower after each race and used the same cable for 10 years...it was still in the lower when I recently sold the boat!
Perhaps having this way to grease the cable w/o having to take the shaft out after each race would help? Allowing a little "float" also sounds like an excellent idea which I will be sure to do.

The old kb 21 just doesn't put out the linear power that these brushless systems create

Running in the teflon liner, how did the grease get to the shaft? Those liners seem to shift position from time to time.

I see. Then drilling holes to inject lube is a great idea.

              Hey Doby,
How are you making out with this? Have you figured out the problem yet?

...from what I remember last Saturday Doby was able to make few nice runs and no cable snaping!!! I think he is on his last one. Check his video under video links under Kitchener Fun Run from last Saturday...
                Cheers

Ran 3 times last Sunday and all is well...but then again, its a brand new cable so from this point on, based on my past luck,,,anything could happen.

It will get some more run time this weekend so I'll have more details then.

                      Cable End Play

I'll be using the REK lower...is there a reliable way to determine the "float" (end play) when assembling?
                      I let the dogs out...

I'm not sure how to check for it being too short, but if the cable is too long, you won't have any fore/aft play in the stubshaft itself...

I drilled all the way through...since the teflon liner takes on the "curve" of the lower housing it didn't seem to rotate out of place.
I see there is a small hole at the top of the REK lower...looks like a good place to squirt some Corrosion-X and thin out the cable grease a bit for better coverage...

Thanks...I fabricated a thin nylon washer for the area where the stub shaft seats. Now I can use stock K&B length cables and there is a small amount of end-play in the stubshaft. No need to grind away at end of the flex cables...

Any way, I think I found a soluton to the problem....I picked up a OS complete lower unit today.
