    Adding Weight

What do you guys use to add weight to your boat? I've heard of adding the sticky tire balancing weights. Anything else?

Seems you can't buy lead shot anymore. Somebody said "reloading" was outlawed? I'm not a gun person so don't really know. Sure would like to find a bag of shot!

I took an old film canister and fixed it to my pool noodle flotation. The noddle is fitted in the hull in such a way that it cannot move around in the boat. Then I use lead shot (reloading is not outlawed in the USA and lead shot is readily available) or you can easily use split shot sinkers (small fishing weights, available anyplace fishing tackle is sold). This makes it easy for me to add or subtract weight.

I like to have my weights not too permanent, what I do is self adhesive tire balancing weights, glue it to a "female" velcro and that onto the male velcro in the desired location... it seems to work fine, even after stuffing the boat, it still in place.

Great Planes makes some self adhesive weights you can get at your LHS. They come in flat sticks are notched into 1/4 ounce squares. I run a small bead of 5 minute epoxy down one side of the weights for insurance when the adhesive gets wet. You can stack them also if needed.

Those weights are exactly the same weights as stick on automotive wheel weights only costs much more. Go to where you get your tires balanced and ask for a strip or 2, they will usually give you some

Thanks Mike. I think I'll try that apply the velcro idea to keep it more adjustable. I have a good LHS near here and a bunch of the industrial strength velcro.

Thanks for the Tip!!! I must be showing my age. The only wheel weights I know of require a hammer to install.

This worked for me. I went to my local tire store and asked if I could buy some stick on wheel weights. Told him it was for an RC boat. The guy asked how many I wanted. He ended up giving me two sticks of 6oz. (1/2oz. - 12 segments/ea.) for free.

There's no way to the beat free stuff and I just bought a new set of tires a few weeks ago at new tire store in my little town. This has potential.
