21 Phil Thomas with Spec power

I was just wondering if anyone has tried this yet with this hull?

I keep thinking that the light FE layup version would make an excellent spec boat.

Someone once mentioned that the larger Phil Thomas SS21 and Whiplash Sport 20 were both better handling hulls than the smaller UL-1 hull using UL-1 ESC/MOTOR combo.

      SS21 left vs. UL-1 right........................................ SS 21 length measures 29 3/4"

I know the whiplash is a great running boat for LSH. I have the opportunity to get either the PT or the Whiplash. The whip is less than half the price.

          Thomas 21

My racing partner has one of the Thomas 21 hulls set up w/Aquacraft UL-1 ESC and motor and it runs very well and is much more stable than my UL-1. His is a nitro layup that he bought used. He did say it would be less work to build a Whip 20 than to fill all the pin holes in the Thomas boat. I think he goes by Toypainter on this forum.

My PT is on it's way. Took less than a week from order to ship date. Still trying to figure out how I want to finish my Whip 20. I know from seeing Brian's run in p power that Phils hull is a very well handling boat.

here is mine on 1515 1y power. Phil is laying up for me a second boat which will be p-spec power, some nice mods for this version. These are great handling boats.

Nice looking finish Cat Boi. Did you really need to put the motor so far back? Just wondering.

Got home to nice big box from Uncle Phil. Looks good but dreading the pin hole debacle. Yeah I know...spackling lots and lots of it.

I quit experimenting with my SS21 because of the cold Winter weather. As soon as it gets warmer and less windy I will try UL-1 esc/motor combo. Boat was very fast with setup in picture and ran like it was on rails (COG seamed spot on).

I am now thinking that maybe having the motor mounted much further back in the boat would have been a far better solution.

My Phil T has udergone numerous mods since the build thread and is running 100% better then it ever has. Instead of mounting a single 4s pack across the boat I am now running two TP 45c 2s packs either side of the motor.

I went the forward route on my 45...works great too. packs either side of motor in rear.

I don't understand how this hull can run well with the CG back. The biggest problem with the PT21 as a P Sport boat is getting the weight far enough forward. With a 1515/1Y as far forward as possible and the packs shoved forward inside the sponsons the boat runs awesome, virtually never blows off. With a lighter AQ motor and the bats behind it, even at lower LSH speeds it would seem to be less than optimum....

Great build Jimmy, clean and sweet.

Jimmy Ster, your setup was pretty much what I thought to do while staring at the hull last nite. Looks good. I usually run my CG farther forward than I see in most other sport hydro setups.

the CG is spot on .
