    motor/esc question

had my new 6L motor hooked up to check motor rotation, gave it a smidge of throttle and started seeing smoke coming from the middle(green) wire, motor sounded 'rough'. I know the smoke isn't usual and likely the 'rough' sound is not either...question which is it motor or esc thats toast? thanks

Use a variable speed drill and connect the rotor to the drill. Spin the motor at high speed and read you AC voltage between each of the wires. It should be real close to even. It will read less than a volt on an XL.

tried that, ah, um, also tried it with couple of my other motors. motor is toast. reason it sounded rough when connected to the flex, is apparently because the shaft isn't true(likely bent), also seems to have internal probs.
      edit
after close examination it looks like I may have damaged one or more of the windings when I tightend the mounting screws. BEWARE with the 6L there is no room for error if your mounting screws are a little long/mount is less than 1/8th inch thick!

the screws needed to mount the motor need to be under 5mm in length. dont ask how I know that.

I think I can guess :) prolly the same way I found out. as long as we're sorta on the subject...don't bother trying to use 3.5mm bullet connecters with the 6L either, they just will not fit over the wires. 4mm conn.s will fit. note the wires on a 7L will only just fit in 3.5mm conn.s

strange, the wires in my 14XL were too small for the 4mm connectors i bought....it would have probably worked better w/ 3.5mm con's...

the 6L is rated(max amps) at 103amps... the 14xl 47amps, wee bit of difference there. since they are mass produced, the leads are no bigger than they need to be. one could prolly use 16 ga wire for 47 amps( I wouldn't) :)
