If you run your boats with a safety loop (compulsory for racing here in Oz) I find the best place for the resistor is soldered at the connections inside the hull across the safety loop.
that way the resistor is automaticaly connected when you plug in the batteries without needing extra plugs on the resistor. Then the loop connects the main power.
A pic might help explain it better.
    Cheers.

I like that system...it serves two purposes.....an ares-tor and a safety loop built together........nice idea thanks

You've just got to remember to disconnect your batteries or that little resistor will continue to draw power. Not much, but it can't be good.
          Cheers.

So you plug in resistor lead and do you leave it connected while running or just until main power leads are together?

It's usually left connected while running.

I'd prefer auto as the default.
