Think the Garmin Forerunner 101 is the best to use. Small, light and got everything you need.

I have the forerunner 201. It has a lithium-ion battery and you get 13 hours /charge. It also comes with a usb connector so you can store and graph your results.

Take a look at the new add on GPS for the eagle tree if you have the V3 logger, was thinking of getting one myself. I saw Peter Z's and this thing is very small if I remember about .75" x 2" and very accurate.

I have an old Garmin eTrex. Nothing fancy, not color, a little slow, but is small and works perfect for R/C. It was cheap and is rugged, I think I paid $100 from REI for it 4 years ago.

EagleTree eLogger with GPS expander is what we love to use...You can overlay actual tracking onto Google Earth, record RPM's, temps, power used, etc...

Garmin Gecko. Has WAAS. Smaller and lighter than the eTrex. Got one off eBay for $40.

I have both the Eagletree and the forerunner 210.
The forerunner is water proof and the Eagletree is not, both work as good as each other.
If you have an eagletree Id go for the GPS expander, as you can graph the boats speed and course.

I'm also very interested in a GPS for my Hydro and am leaning toward the EagleTree system but am a little unclear on the pieces needed. Can someone confirm that I would need both the Eagle Tree Systems eLogger V3 w/Integrated Connectors and the Eagle Tree Systems GPS Expander V4 ... if the above is true then does the Eagle Tree Systems GPS Expander V4 plug into the boat's receiver to capture the data and then is removed and plugged into the Eagle Tree Systems eLogger V3 w/Integrated Connectors which is pluggged into a laptop for data downloading and analyizing? Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
                    Thanks

they gps plugs in to the eagle tree logger. once your run or runs are finished you then plug the logger to your computer and down load data. there is also a led screen available that attaches to the logger and you get to see the data with out connecting to a pc, you can nominate what data is shown on the screen, it wont give you a full run Analiese like when linked to a computer but will give you top speed, highest temps, max amps, highest rpm, lowest voltage count that sort of thing.
