    ESC question

    Hey guys,

Remember me? I am the one doing that Kyosho Viper Restoration project. Things have been going smoothly, and here's what I have so far...

Would you believe this build has cost me less than $150 so far?

Anyway, on to my question. The last piece to this puzzle is the ESC. I was originally going to get the Turnigy/Seaking 120A. But, we all know its been recalled. So, I was looking around, and stumbled upon the HiModel brand ESCs.

The price is great on these HiModels. I know I will need to watercool/waterproof it but I can manage this.

First off, does anyone have experience with the HiModel ESCs in a boat application? Do they work well?

    Next,
I am between the 125A and the 200A versions. I would rather get the 200A but there is a $20 difference. Also, I am running a 3S LiPo, so I would need to get the version of the 200A WITHOUT the BEC to get this to work. The 125's have a BEC.

I don't mind using an external BEC, but it is more cash to get one. By the way, what does a UBEC stand for?

I am running a 1755 kV Feigao motor, which is said to pull 44 amps max, so is a 125A enough or should I get the 200A model?

    In short,
    1) How are the HiModel ESC's?
    2) 125A or 200A version?

    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

I know some people using the himodel esc's and they like them. In my opinion, the 125A would be sufficient but you might want to solicit some other opinions. I just went to the himodel website and they don't list those esc's anymore?

I have one myself in a cat. Haven't really ran it on the water for any extended period of time. Just testing. But others like them. Here is a thread.. http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...hlight=himodel

Looks like I have my answer. I'll have to decide between the 125A and the 200A, then I'll waterproof it and get one of the cooling plates at OSE.

          Thanks!

Thanks! I have to admit I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other!

As far as I know UBEC stands for universal battery elimination circuit, like for cars, boats, and planes. I have a Turnigy UBEC and it does the job and was 10 bucks plus it has an LED that looks cool!!

Okay, so I think I have decided on this

It's the 125A version, with BEC

The main factor behind that decision was the price. 32 dollars is a good deal!

Since my 14L only pulls 44 amps according to OSE's website, surely a 125A will do the trick.

Once I get it, I'll use some epoxy to waterproof it, the cooling plate OSE sells, and some thermal paste. Speaking of which, anyone know where to get thermal paste?

Does this sound like a good plan?

hahaha your using my recomendation from the other site lol

but seriosly chunky make sure that you use the dp270 because any old epoxy other than that will ruin the esc.... im not quite sure on where to get the thermal paste but im sure that someone on here will chime in, one place to check would be ace hardware or walmart. although im not sure that they will have them

If it's a good idea, I'll use it, and yours was a good one :P :D

I will definitely be buying the dp270 stuff.

                    Still looking for thermal paste

Thermal paste can be had from OSE or Best Buy. Saw it there today. $6.99. Just ask for the paste for CPU's. It's Silver something. I saw it next to the CPU fans.

I found some at Radio Shack for $3

Sure, it's not the name brand Arctic Silver 5 stuff, but I think it will do the trick.
