    Telemetry.....what are my options?

I have a spektrum dx4s TX and it has the telemetry, what are my options to use it? Can u use the land based receiver? Is there an add on? I know it doesn't reach far but it would be nice to bring it in close and check temps on the esc real quick. Ideas?

I looked at the TX with the telemetry recieved and all the sensors. I understand why most don't go that ute, you would be broke trying to do a few boats!! Looks like nice stuff. I have my flysky it-4 that has all the telemetry included fir $160, about $45-55 to complete outfit another boat. I know it's cheap and people say bad things about them out of jealousy but you could get one of them for testing out your boats rather than going broke and possibly ending up with something that doesn't work on water etc.
I promise you'll love it and will become a closet fan of them. It ran 3 different boats and a truck last year without a single hiccup. I'm only saying this to get you going:) The programming options and telemetry is very impressive though. You should try one, send me an email if you want to keep it quiet:)
How's that for not even coming close to answering your question!

I like my Traxxas set. The iPhone dashboard is sweet looking. Pretty inexsensive on eBay, as they are removed from RTR stuff and sold off. They just released the GPS and expander unit.IMG_6634.jpgIMG_6635.jpgIMG_6637.jpgOuterlimits inside.jpg

I bet the transmitter unit with the docking base wil get even cheaper, since they also released a new transmitter that links your phone via bluetooth - no docking base required so your pitman can monitor and make changes on the fly while you are driving.

Can I use an iPhone with no service? I have several spare I phones but no service to them. Could just leave on there permanently.

I am sure that you can, you can use Wifi all over the place even when they have been 'cut off'

Man....I just checked it out. Cheap. How good does it work? I can get a radio and receiver and sensors for 64 bucks. Now I have questions before I buy this stuff

                Questions:

How far does it reach (radio and telemetry)
DO I need a marine receiver or will a car receiver work fine? If this stuff fits the bill it will be on order today and a brand new spektrum dx4s will be for sale soon.

Ok after searching a little, I've gathered that traxxas uses their land receivers in the spartan also. So no dedicated marine receiver. Hmmmm. This has me thinking. The receivers are cheap too. I could fit my whole fleet of boats and cars for not much cash outlay. I may try one to see if I even like it first before selling my spektrum stuff. Seems too good to be true and you know what they say....

I just don't like the lack of model memory and the setup buttons as opposed to a screen on Speky. As long as you get the antenna wire outside the hull all should be well Travis.

I really like it, to bad it's iPhone. You could still use it as a stand alone system and just use the telemetry and your own reciever could you not?

I wonder if the docking station is only there for the radio tuning expo, end point etc. If the telemetry is wife and communicates directly with the phone you may not need to use the radio itself. Or you hook everything with the traxxas radio and still use your own. I like the the available real time gps, though it's another $90 on its own. I may just have to buy one to play around with!

I will try to clear up some questions.

                          1. Range is great, never had a problem with control or telemetry and the antenna is in the boat under the deck.
                          2. There are two transmitters available:

First is the inexpensive TQi (this has a docking base and uses any iPhone or iTouch with the original wide connection port, not sure about the 5s, no WiFi necessary as it is direct connect). You can buy the transmitter without the docking base and purchase the docking base seperatly and add it to the transmitter. The transmitter is available in 2 or 4 channel.

Second is the new (= more expensive) TQiLink (this has no docking base and uses WiFi to connect any iPhone or iTouch to the transmitter). They are going to release an andriod app making it compatable with all smart phones, since no dock interface issues.

                          3. The transmitter is programable with the menu and set buttons through beeps and blinks - totaly useless in my opinion. The phone app lets you configure everything via a graphical display and allows you to assign one of several functions to a trim pot (usually D/R) on the transmitter. Unlimited model storage options with names and descriptions.

                          4. The Traxxas standard landbased receiver is used and I have installed mine in there waterproof box which has an optical lens to see the led status of the receiver. The receiver will allow you to connect three sensors - temp, voltage, rpm (rpm is via a magnet and pickup). They have just released an expansion module that plugs into the receiver. The module has a socket for a GPS module that is tiny (quarter) and can also accept up to six additional sensors. The GPS will only give you actual speed, no tracking, plotting or altitude.

Here is my expander module and the GPS:

The telemetry communicates via the receiver to the transmitter. The WiFi is only for the communication between the transmitter and the phone. I just thought, it would be cool to install it on a tablet and set it up on a tripod. I guess FPV is next for us boat guys.

Also, there is a record feature on the dashboard screen. It allows you to record your run and replay it with audio if your device has a mic. You will only see the guages respond as there is no plotting function. So if you want to note a specific part of the run, just announce it with you voice during the recording session.
