Did I get a bad motor?

I have a TP4070 10D 830kv motor in my 1/8 scale. From the first run it ran hot. It has the longest water jacket on it I could get. Plenty of water flow.
Previous motors, a Turnigy SK8 850 kv, and a TP 4060 950 kv ran cooler, the Turnigy motor was mint but the wires/insulation coming out of the motor were damaged and two of them melted off.

The esc is a ZTW 150 HV.

Yesterday I did one run with a detounged X452 and all the motor windings have got really hot and it has the burned stink to it now. Last week I ran an X447/3 with an M cut, and a Prather 235, no worries.

So my question is, did I just happen to get a motor with bad windings, or could the esc have an issue also?

BTW we run 10s in our scales here. Hull is an Albert Lee. 20210710_113733.jpg

I am thinking to get a TP 4070 6Y 780 kv to replace it with, that would allow me a little more freeway with prop sizes.

I had the same problem with a sprint cat first motor was a sss 720on 12s ran perfect speed 70mph temp good ,i changed only the motor for a TP 4070 850kv, motor ran hot and not faster(with sss prather 245 70mph and with tp 62 mph and very hot) so changed the motor again now a Lehner 2260/8 and doing 73 mph and stays cool, the bottom line is i can't get moore speed out of a tp (also with an other boat same result)

My first thought is that your ESC is set for too much timing on a D wind motor. Should be 0-3 degrees. Was the ESC set for a Y wind some other time?

Weight isn't an issue, I have had to add weight to keep the boat down at speed. I did do a check on the turn fin as I had quite a lot of left rudder trim on and found that it was not parallel to the boats centreline so I have shimmed that now. The boat is an ex nitro and the guy who built it, well didn't always do a great job of things. I think I will get a 780 6Y version and try that as I should be able to get one here this week. Or first club race day is Feb 6 so not a lot of time to waste.
The 850 kv motor is still working but I do not trust it.

Yes timing was set on the lowest value. I checked that after the first run.

I could with some minor mods. A 5684 or 5692 800 kv is an option, but a little more cost and perhaps harder on the esc.

What is also interesting is that while the windings cooked, the 6mm bullets didn't get any hotter than normal, they show no signs of stress.

56xx is more expensive and more torque too.

I decided to go with the TP 4070 780 kv. SSS5684 800kv was an option but 50% heavier and I would probably have to modify my cover hatch as well as the mount to make it fit.
