Vented vs unvented motor?

Does it matter much between choosing a vented or unvented motor?

Depends on whether the venting is properly done with a fan or not. Just holes in the housing are only the first half of the story

It's just I got some tp motors that are a closed, or unvented can, now I'm thinking should I have got vented cans.

if your cooling works good then open or closed is no problem ,i have a closed 4070 and TP says with cooling no problem .A lehner motor has a cooling fan in the motor that helps to cool the inside of the motor very good

TP are not optimized for ventilation so don't overestimate the housing to have holes or not.

Ventilated Lehner and Neu have fans so there it is a different story.

I prefer vented motors to allow any moisture to escape. Although minimal, the rotor does create airflow within the motor and this does help cool the rotor. It's also allows some natural convective cooling to take place after a run.

an other thing to go for a vented motor ,i use a cpu fan on the back of the motor to create a perfect storm in the motor.i use a tp 4070 1400kv 7s in a mono with a fan on the back and with water and air cooling the highest temp i've seen is 22C on the motor (prop abc 2015-19)

Unless you're filling your hull with sand at athe beach vented is the way to go for all the reasons already mentioned. However personally I wouldn't take the financial hit selling second hand sealed cans to get new vented ones.

If you have a drill press and the skill, you could vent them your self. I have done this on some motors. You need to remove the front and rear covers to do it or you will destroy the windings.
