    Brushless / ESC compatibility

Have 21" liteweight v-hull. Want to convert to Brushless. Running vintage GRAUPNER Surface drive. Need suggestions as to a reasonably priced motor/ESC combo. Thanks, Kurt

Typically I would suggest a 28mm x 50-60mm motor of 2800-3500kv, 100-120A ESC, and 3s 3000-4000mAh LiPo battery with a mono of that size. Bu I don't know what boat it is, what you want from it or what you have already.

There was another post asking about a similar boat recently witch also didn't have enough info in it for anyone to give a direct answer that mentioned 6 cells, was that also you? If so what sort of cells? NiCd, NiMh, LiIon, LiPo? and what capacity are the cells? 6 Nickel based cells will need a motor with a much higher KV than one for use with 6 lithium based cells.

Does it have a motor mount in it already? If so for what size motor? are the mounting holes 25mm apart for a 36mm (540) motor or 16/19mm apart for a 28mm (400 size motor)? 28mm is the usual size motor for a boat that size, but if that would mean buying a new mount, with the expense and effort of ripping the old one out and fitting it, you may be better of getting a short 36mm motor.

What do you want from the boat? are you trying to replicate the performance it used to have, but with a more efficient brushless motor for more runtime and less maintenance? Or do you want to go faster and if so how fast do you want to go? How much runtime do you want?

What is the boat, does it have a hull that is suitable for higher speed, or does it have rocker built in to get the nose up with limited power? You say lightweight but that means very little without a number attached. Is it a draggy or a slippery design, what prop did it run in its previous life? you should probably aim to use a similar size prop. What is the hull made from, and if plastic has it been stored out of sunlight, or do you need a gentle setup so it doesn't shatter the first time it flips?
