I picked up an older 24" hydro, it had a Aveox 1409/1.5y non-sensor motor and a pre 2003 CC Pheonix 80a running on 14.4v. we'll the Pheonix is now toast after I tried to run it with a pistol grip style Tx. Can I run any brushless ESC as long as its an 80a or higher with this motor?

Don't see why not. The Pistol should have had nothing to do with how it worked though. What was your set-up? That's a lot of Volts for that Motor. Do you know the KV? -
2650 Kv, max RPM 40k, so 4s lipo is the max, in theory that puts it at around 39k and some change.
Set up
24" bandit shovel nose
aveox 1409/1.5y motor
CC Phoenix 80a good for 22.2v (pre 2003, so no lipo cut off or ability to connect toe CC Link)
12 cell sub c pack was in the hull, but I put two 7.4v 5000mah 40c in series
not sure of prop, size but about 40-42mm 2 blade copper
Skyion FM 27hz radio system
From what I read the CC Phoenix line is designed for aircraft style controllers and may not work with pistol grips...
Any ways bench tested fine, put it in the water, got out 50-75 feet off shore at maybe 1/4 throttle, started to glitch throttle controls, turned it around and it took off WOT headed towards shore, missed my neighbors dock and boat by inches. ESC cut out and it coasted to shore. ESC smells burnt and 2 FETS are slightly blackened.
Truckpull asked me about setting for the switching rate and I have no idea, never messed with anything that detailed before.
Any ways I just happened to have a Hobbywing Seaking 120a on the way I was going to use in an old Kyosho Viper, I didn't know if it would work with that motor or not, I didn't want to fry the motor by having something like that no programmed correctly.Comment

Most certainly you exceeded the amp rating of the old-skool ESC by....a bunch. That motor is way too high in Kv for that little hydro especially with a 40-42mm prop. No surprise that the ESC cooked.
The SK120 controller is designed for pistol grip radios and should work with that motor, although I'd drop the prop size down to 36-38mm. The motor will not be the weak point.

I picked the boat up on ebay, it was a poor ad, and i took a chance on it, didn't know there was a motor, battery and esc still in it. it came out of southern alaska with this set up already in it, I'm guesing it was used a racer. I'll drop a few prop sizes and wotk my way up.
