    Stripping motor wires

We all know that motor wires have a shellac on them with the exception of the ends we solder too. I'm not sure how many have had to do it but what are you cleaning off the shellac with when you need to?

Can you just use a razor blade or sand paper to do that?

Not sure if I am remembering correctly or not but I think Andy Kunz had something that he dipped the wire in to clean the coating off

Caustic soda solution. I've used pure Lye with table salt in a cast iron end cap. Heat with torch until mixture goes liquid.

I've done it to one motor. I can redo it to give you better instructions and confirm that I'm actually doing it right.

I went by this guy's instructions but I think he states an incorrect ratio of salt to lye.

This is another video I learned from. After stripping you have to clean wire very well with clean water and soap. Some of the solution may stick and needs cleaning. Spread strands out so each one is free before dunking in solution.

I had a hella of a time removing the stuff. Tried scrapping but the solder wouldn't take. I was successful using aspirin. Tin the wire on top of an aspirin it will melt and fizz just keep adding solder and it works great. Do it outside because the smell can knock you out.

              Aspirin... the blood thinner pill?

It didn't work after you sanded the wires either? I'd imagine the wire to be clean and clear of any layer of that stuff afterwards...

After scrapping the conductors of the motor i.e wires the solder barely tacked on. Regular pill aspirin with the heat and solder chemically removes the lacquer. It might take two or more pills. Also the smell of burnt aspirin is terrible...it should definetly be done outside. Somebody passed this trick down to me years ago. Hadn't used it for a long time until I had to remember it when mistakenly I cut the bullets of the motor. Was scraping with no success for a while before that
