    let the smoke out

I recently purchased a starship rigger used. And low and behold it had a leopard 2040 4450kv motor. That seemed like a bonus.

Well I plugged it in and it armed and the motor started running on it own and then a small amount of smoke came out of the motor. I killed power waited a bit and tried again and it seems fine. It revs up and seems to run good.

I've never seen smoke come out of something and not be broke. What do you guys think? Throw It away and buy a new one or try to run it?

Contact the previous owner and find out if he sprayed anything in the motor (wd40, corrosion x, etc) if so, that could be the cause. If not, don't chance it. Get a new motor.

Kind of a crap shoot............if its a cheapo ESC you may try it, motor may work, worst case you already lost the motor and you lose a cheapo ESC(if thats what you have). For a motor that size you can get a 30-40a ESC for like 12 bucks on Hobbyking

That is a great call, I wonder how much did the OP bench tested the motor. In order for any smoke to come out due to any sprayed in chemicals, I would think there has to be some temp in the motor .

The person I bought it from stated in the for sale ad he knew nothing about it. The smoke was almost instantaneous. And it got hot after that. Not quite skin burning but pretty close... Maybe I will try to run it and see what happens.. I guess retrieval will be the worst part if it burns up.

oh and it was really odd smoke too.. almost like fog. It disappeared quickly with very little smell.. not like anything I've seen. I haven't seen corrosionx smoke before but anything else I've seen and smelled hasn't been quite this odd

              Hmm.....
That is magic smoke released by tiny aliens inside your Starship Outrigger...
That's pretty hot. Regardless of whether it is the chemical residue or the lacquer of the winding burning up, if it is for a few seconds, it should not be that hot.
As said, it is a crap shoot, What ESC do you have in the Starship?

It's the tenshock 40 amp. I assume it's the one that comes with the boat

Could have been moisture. I'd open the motor on one end and chek for rust, etc...

I have that ESC, works fine with the stock motor, 40 Amp sounds a bit low but considering the small rigger, it does the job.
The thing you need to consider is almost every other ESC would be too big in that tiny hull, so I would not change it out as my first option.
BTW, 4450kv is higher than my motor, I can't say how long the ESC will last though.

well I hope it does ok.. I was looking at sizes of replacements and your right. I don't know what I'm going to be able to fit in there. I think I'll order a new motor and hope the tenshock holds up. That way I might avoid trying to find a replacement esc that fits

I only know enough to know that things don't always add up but the lba204 should only pull like 20 amps so I hope a 40 amp holds up

Thats a small motor(2040) the 40 amper should be plenty.
