So I'm shopping for a waterproof esc last night and saw there was a mamba xl2 in the ose store. I have a converted water cooled mamba monster 2 in my mini. I love it. Works perfect and runs cool. I wonder if I can do the same thing with the mamba xl2? It's made for 1/5 scale vehicles and will hold up under some high amp loads (according to data logs I've seen on the web). I really like castle stuff and since they did away with the boat line of esc's , this looks like a good alternative. Want to run it in my shocker on a 1527 1250 kv on 8s. Thoughts?
mamba xl2 in a boat?

Just talked to castle. The guy I talked to wasn't crazy about the idea at first, said no warranty etc etc. Then we got to talking and he realized I wasn't a dummy (lol, I can imagine the crap they hear day to day lol) so he did seem interested after that and gave me some ideas. I say what Tha hell, ima try it. Has data logging too.Last edited by kfxguy; 05-14-2014, 07:06 PM.32" carbon rivercat single 4s 102mph, 27” mini Rivercat 92mph, kbb34 91mph, jessej micro cat(too fast) was -

Ha! That was good for a laugh. if you want to try it out go for it. I would have thought the airplane line of esc's better suited for the application and easier to watercool but it's your dime. The shocker with that motor may need a little more esc but that's just my thoughts, the mamba may be great. Swordfish esc's are a good option to. Man you've bank rolled a pile of builds lately, I don't know how you do it!Comment

I was going to go with the mamba xl2 but I'm gonna hold off for a bit. I just took apart my burned up esc and found out how to better waterproof my new ones. I'm going to try it again but better. Hopefully have better luck. If not I'll buy a couple swordfish 240's as they are coated already. I'm already thinking about getting another cheetah too. I have a carbon Daytona hull that will be here tomorrow, and I bought a 1717 for it too. That ought to be a screamer like my shocker. I'll likely sell it tho after I tune it in and getting it running how I want. A 1717 on 6s with the fightercat 101 was a really good setup in the cheetah. It'll go much faster in a daytona hull.32" carbon rivercat single 4s 102mph, 27” mini Rivercat 92mph, kbb34 91mph, jessej micro cat(too fast) wasComment

Not sure who you talked with at Castle but your esc is basically the same as the Hydra 240A 33.6V but with a different case

the water cooling on the Hydra esc is a joke, but take the stock junk cooling off and mod them they are great escs.NAMBA20...Caterpillar UL-1, P-Spec OM29, P-Mono DF33, P-Spec JAE, Aussie 33" Hydro-LSH, Sprintcat CC2028 on 8s, PT SS45 Q Hydro, PS295 UL-1 power, OSE Brothers Outlaw QMono 4-sale, Rio 51z CC2028 on 8sComment

Getting into quadcopters as well? I hope your not giving up on boats! That daytona your getting needs twins! I have switched to doing twins on mine. That way I don't end up overtaxing a motor for a hot sport setup and it will go real fast when I up cell count.. You can build a real fast boat, the daytona will love it and you will love building twins. The shocker would love thing to, take it to 100 mph. That will get your interest rolling again!Comment

About modifying all these castle esc's. Just a thought but at the end of the day you have no warranty. Buying sword fish or other esc's from Steve here at OSE gives you a vendor that stands behind his product and a Warranty from the manufacturer. Why continue to support a company that has turned its back on the boat market. Why wouldn't they tell you to modify there other esc's for boat use. They get to sell a controller that they don't have to worry about, as soon as its modified it's not there problem. It's a win win situation for castle. Just my thoughts.Comment

2) swordfish escs (well in my price range, wasnt wanting to spend $250 on the 240 right now) arent waterproof either. Im pretty sure when i waterproof it, my warrant goes out the window too.
3) I really dont care much for shrink wrapped esc's
4) i cant get an answer on wether the swordfish esc"s have reverse. I want a reverse function
5) this castle esc has a built in data logging feature
6) did i mention preety much all the motors i have are castle
castle did not turn their back on the boating market. I actually had a talk with the rep about this. (sorry if i sound like a fan boy) he said they lost money on the controllers. He told me for every one controller they sold, they replaced one. so they were making no money on them. He aslo stated it wasnt a fault of the controller but some users would try to push things too far and thats the result. If it was used within its design and capability, they did well. Im pretty sure that if i buy a swordfish esc and push it till it blows, im not getting a replacement. Thats the nature of this section of this hobby. Castle, being in several rc segments (car, boat, airplane etc) had a repution to uphold and warrantied the boat controllers like car and plane esc's. I think they realized their mistake in this and instead of telling people you have no warranty or a very limited, short term warranty and ticking everyone off...they decided to pull the plug. The bad thing is we are stuck with mainly chinese controllers that sometimes are hit or miss. The only good option (but cost prohibitive for most) from what i hear is mgm. theres no way i can afford to put an mgm controller in every of of my boats as the fleet keeps getting larger. Thats why im looking for alternatives. Its a good thing that i found out (thanks to above poster!) that the mamba xl2 is the same esc as an ice 240 at less than half the price. I saw one dissassembled and it looks super easy to waterproof it. and its only $15032" carbon rivercat single 4s 102mph, 27” mini Rivercat 92mph, kbb34 91mph, jessej micro cat(too fast) wasComment

If castle was replacing an esc for everyone sold as there rep stated to you the problems would be much deeper rooted that a few people running beyond there design capabilities. That's saying that every esc they sold failed and had to be replaced. That's 100% failure. Doesn't add up at all or they wouldn't have been a popular esc to start with.
Castle motors are mainly made in China as is most of there stuff. The do assemble a few of there esc's in Mexico and the US but they are by no means American made. The mamba is assembled in the US.
The swordfish escs do not have reverse. Atleast the 220, the 240 and 300amp ones do not. I think the swordfish are an excellent alternative and already have a much better track record than Castle if even half of what the tech guy told you. Blaming there failures on the customer is a pretty lame way of really saying there esc's just couldn't stand up to the rigors of rc boating. Good luck with whatever you go with.Comment
