    Leopard Motor Maintenance

I am wondering how to properly maintain brushless inrunners.

I have never done anything to maintain them in the past and recently my Leopard 4092 700kv seized up and fried along with my Hydra Ice HV ESC.

I took the motor apart and see that it is completely rusted which is what I am assuming caused the seize up and fire.

My question is how do I avoid this from happening to my motors?20130805_162624 (Small).jpg20130805_162613 (Small).jpg20130805_162552 (Small).jpg20130805_162221 (Small) (Small).jpg

Don't get them wet for starters, but if they do get wet, use a water displacing spray such as wd40 or even electrical parts cleaner and spray the motor generously to insure the water is gone. At least that's what I do

I like to spray a good amount of Corrosion X in my motors after each race day...
on my OPC I spray the motor after every race

I do what brushless said....but I also disassemble and clean if I know my motor got really wet.
If you don't have corrosion x WD40 works fine.
Oil in the bearings would also be prudent.
        This is NOT a toy?!?

Also oil the bearings before each outing.

I second the corrosion x, I use that stuff for my flex shaft after each run. It also works awesome for waterproofing (or more resistant) ESCs and motors. Great stuff!

What about saltwater runs? Im going to be going to the beach next year on vacation and wanted to do some wave jumping but there is always some water that gets into the hulls. How would you guys clean out after a saltwater run, especialy the motor? WD40 it after a freshwater rinse inside the hull?

Just for clarification you guys Corrosion X/WD40 your disassembled motors after each run? What about non-race boats, what would you guys recommend?

if you have corrosion probs with fresh water you will be glad to know that salt water offers 1000 per cent more oppertunities to screw your electronics up....btw have you seen shark week on the discovery channel? lol i digress...use the corrosion x and try to keep alll water out of the boat....grease flex etc well and clean it up after the run is about all u can do....

I would also flush your cooling lines with fresh water and the hull hardware as well. Then WD40 and corrosion X everything up afterwards, especially the flex.

I don't disassemble the motor after each run....only if it got soaked. I do blow them out with air and corrosion x though.

I run salt water on a few boats sport. After I run that day I:
Flush Boat inside and out with fresh water. Pull shaft and fresh water flush the shaft, regrease and wrap in a paper towel, wd down the shaft tube. Squirt some wd, preferably corrosion x, into the motor and run the motor a couple seconds. Squirt wd into the cooling lines.
Pull the connectors off the receiver and flush clean as necessary. Dry everything off very well. Oil in the bearing you can get to and park it in the sun to dry.
Don't forget to treat your batteries...they can hide moisture and corrosion deep down under the shrink wrap.
If you have compressed air around, it is pretty handy.
A couple well placed folded paper towels in the rear of the Boat while running can help reduce the spread of water.
I also throw a couple desiccant packs in each Boat when i store them to draw out any extra moisture.

                    Have fun bud!
