    Motor Burnout Why ?

I recently sold a TP Power 4092 1600kv D wind motor which left me in perfect working condition only 1 run and the power and speed I got was phenomenal. When the buyer received the motor he ran it in his boat for 30 secs and the motor burnt out. What caused this? Is it his fault?

    He was running

    Spartan Hull
    T180 esc
    42 x 59 metal prop
    6s Orion Lipos

My guesses are either, Timing was set incorrectly or that the esc is faulty. Any help much appreciated.

Here's the motor in my boat - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za29F-dLQBM

It is difficult to diagnose from here. While I like the TP motor I have, they are still a budget motor with less QA/QC than a comparable Neu Lehner or Castle. It could be that the motor had thin insulation on the windings and shorted out (this can eventually happen with any motor, but usually not on the second run). Even if he had run a huge prop it is doubtful that the motor would have gotten hot enough to "burn out" in the short time seen in the video. Motor timing was probably not the cause. We'd have to see how he installed it and have a better description of the damage than "burnt out".

I would upload pics normally but he sent them through ebay and I can't download or save them. The best description I can give is that the rotor has burnt from the center outwards.

How about a screen capture? Right now it sounds like a shorted winding...

I've tried screen capture but I can't paste it on here. Best I could do was through Google drive although the picture quality has diminished

Yes, I thought the same thing, he said it was the first run but I can't be sure. Only problem is with ebay's resolution process the buyer can nearly always get their money back. They definite thing is that I sent him a motor that was working perfectly within a couple days of receiving it, the motor has become damaged.

and how do we know that was the motor he bought from you in the hull when it stopped??

                just thinking out loud.....

At this point it is impossible to say what the cause of the damage was. The OP is right, he's screwed if the buyer wants to be dishonest since eBay usually takes the side of the buyer - which it should in the long run since more folks are screwed by dishonest sellers than by lying buyers. Just one of the costs of doing business on the Internet....

                    I agree.........
ebay can be good, or it can be bad.

I settled with him on a partial refund, half the costs. He bought other stuff from me with no problem so I'm hoping he has been genuine about this issue.

I've only ever burnt out one motor myself, and the boat stopped dead in the middle of the lake as it always did when something went wrong...

I don't know TP motors but can you wind overly long motor mounting screws into the windings, or are the mounting holes blind?

                            That's a good point Paul.
I've seen it happen with other motors & yes, it could happen with TP Power motors.
See the danger. THEN DO IT ANYWAY!!!
