    Need new motor..

Looks like my Feigao 12XL 1390kv finally crapped out. Been running 8S in a Pursuit hull with X438/X442 prop for a few years now and it finally bit it. I am looking at the Leopard motors at the moment and was wondering how the 4082 (or even 4092) ~1300-1400kv would hold up on 8S? I'm thinking if the 12xl lasted as long as it did, the bigger 4082(92?) would hold up even better yet be much more efficient as well. Thoughts (besides "it's overkill"- I'm already aware of that :D)? I run the boat on 6S on the river and such when there is a little chop, but 8S on the canal here for some high speed runs more often than not. Thanks.

The Leopard will spin more prop than the Feigao did, it has more torque from its larger can and 4-pole construction. If you want to run the same prop you may want to choose a higher Kv, closer to 1600. Or use the same Kv and a slightly larger/higher pitch prop.

How long a motor lasts depends on many factors, both mechanical and operational. I have no idea if the Leopard will last as long for you as the Feigao did.

I knew it would make more torque and could spin "more" prop, but I figured even the same KV, same prop would still be faster due to being able to pull more RPM's loaded yet still be more efficient than the Feigao was. I thought about more KV, but thought 1600 may be too much KV for an 8S setup? Also, is the 4082 enough, or should I go with the 4092 and work the motor a little less? Thanks.

The Leopard 4092 1390kv on 8S is a good powerhouse. Gill

I'm sure it is! The 12XL was 1390kv and was pretty damn nasty on 8S. It didn't have near the torque that the 4092 has either, so that may really work well! That's another option then, thank you! Just trying to decide if I am better off with a 4082 or 92. Is there any disadvantage to going with the larger motor? Is it automatically going to be more efficient or is it going to draw more amps compared to a similar KV 4082 given the same situation? I know loads will vary a lot depending on props and other variables, I am just talking static- does it take more power to spin the 4092 than a 4082?

There is a YouTube vid of a Pursuit with a 4082 1600 on 8S and the thing is too fast for it's own good- just about perfect :). I just think that setup is way too "hot", or are the motors that much better than the Feigao to where you can run the higher KV on higher voltage setups? I know a 1600kv Feigao 540XL on 8S would end in a smoke show! Thanks again.

Joe I never played with a Feigao motor but with many Leo's and they have lot of torque .The 4082 1600 seems to me a better option if you want a faster boat. Gill

Thank you Gill! I just have no experience with the Leopard motors and to me 1600 sounds high for an 8S setup- that's why I wanted to ask for opinions and I appreciate the response! Hopefully the OSE cart will be up today and I'll get my order in. Thanks again.

Ordered the 4082 1600. Going to run it on 6S for a while to get it all setup and get some temp readings, a bit nervous about 8S on a 1600kv motor but we'll see :).

Running that motor on 8S can be done safely IF you follow these guidelines:

                    1. Start with a smaller prop than you run on 6S.
                    2. Only make 2 long passes - one to the left, one to the right - then bring the boat in to check the temps and let it cool off.
                    3. Keep the wiring as short as practical to help protect the ESC.

Thanks Fluid! Yeah, I figure I'd get it dialed in on 6S (prop, stinger, etc.) although it should be fairly close from it's last setup. Once I get it, prop down and hit it with 8S. I would run an x438 on 8S with the 1390 Feigao, so I'm curious where I'll end up with this one. Makes more torque but also has a higher KV, so we'll see. If it pulls the same or gasp- bigger prop, it will be absolutely ballistic! I know this is overkill, but I want something to safely run at the lake on 6 or possibly even 4S depending on conditions and still have a respectable speed yet sill handle the 8S for blasting up and down the canal behind the house here for the jaw dropping runs :). Thank you everyone for the info.

Well, got the motor yesterday and got to run it today for the first time. I have to say, on 6S the Leopard will kick the ever living snot out of the Feigao on 6S- and that is using the same prop, only a X442. With the power this thing has to pull a bigger prop, I'm not sure I'll be needing 8S anymore and am honestly unsure of this hulls ability to stay on the water at that power level! I'd say it is every bit as fast as the Feigao was on 7S, if not faster. I even tried it on 4S to see how it was (4S2P 8800mah total) and while it wasn't ballistic, it was still respectable and had a ridiculous run time! I think that may be my new setup for running when we are out on the boat- perfect combo of speed and run time for the choppy water. Having been out of the game for a while and never having better than a "Nemesis blue" (glorified overpriced Feigao) in my boats in the past, I have to say I am very impressed with the Leopard so far. Thank you to those who recommended it!
