I ran 9s but that was in a road car Brad. I wouldnt do that in a boat. The current draw would be too high.

WOW! Do you agree with Brushless55 about 8s?

I think its a 6s motor in boats. Its rated at 45,000RPMs max. When using the max RPM rating of a motor, I use the fully charged cell voltage to figure out if I am under that. 3.7v is commonly used, but not always the case. The last boat I ran logged almost 4v/cell at full throttle, so it is possible to get more RPMs than that equation would suggest when using 3.7v.
Secondly, its kind of a big can for smaller boats, so it would be best used in larger boats, where a larger prop is needed. If you want to go down in prop size and up in voltage, a smaller can motor would probably be a better choice.

Just my two cents. It doesnt mean it cant be done...just doesnt make a lot of sense to me. I would rather spin a 1520 fast than a 1717. The larger the can, the less RPM capability, and more capability to spin a larger prop.

I ran it on 9s in my 1/7 scale on road, but I regularly go well over recomended RPM/voltage ranges in my road cars. In my 1/10 scale I ran a 6900kv motor on 4s for speed. In either setup for "sport" running, I would drop way down in voltage. I also accept that running those motors at that RPM range can result in broken parts at any time.

Well the reason i asked is because I have another 40" mono in the way, And just picked up another 1717.....I do like the way the 1717 runs on 6s but i figured in that large of a hull 6s wasn't going to cut it for me.

Ya i have thought about removing the 1717 out of my 33" hull. Even though i love the rush of that fast boat it just really can't be ran at full throttle.

You're thinking backwards though. The larger the hull is, the less freedom you have to add RPM. The larger hull will pull more current than the smaller one, even on 6s, just because its a greater load/hard to push. The larger hull also requires a larger prop, which compounds the problem. If you want a reliable setup to go faster in that big of a boat you have to go up in voltage and DOWN in kv. Run it on 8 or 9s, but at the RPM you are running in your 33", and you will be able to prop it to go just as fast, probably faster.

I'm going to run my Thundertiger OBL on 5s and 6s with the CC1717 motor and a big prop, should see low 60's
I'm thinking of getting a HV esc so I can prop down and run 8s on it to see just what it can do

                    Make-a-wake ran 6s on a 1717 with a x450 and hit 60 with it on a 39" mono.

You should get one of the ice contorollers so you can log it. If you happened to find a deal on a LV one they are good to 8s too!
Watch the temps on the caps. Even when the controller stays cool, the caps seem to get hotter on high RPM apps.
One of these days I'll make a video of my 1/7 scale car. It sounds pretty crazy to hear that 1717 buzz by at high RPM. It would sound sick in a boat.
