Seaking 120a esc works but 180a doesn't? help!!!

I have been upgrading my blackjack 24 into a psychotic monster and I believe my current ESC is holding me back. But when I switched to the Seaking 180a esc I had amazing immediate results followed by utter disappointment. Here is some background:

I am running a leopard 3650 2750kv motor (I also have the 2450kv version and the 3660 2050kv) on an upgraded engine mount, using the blackjack 29 flex shaft and an upgraded strut. I am primarily running it on 4s & 5s (Pulse 5s 45c 4500mah) with 38-40mm 1.6 pitch props. In an effort to keep her cool, I also put in 3 additional thru-hull water pickups, so I am running 2 coolant lines to the motor and esc. I installed wider tubing and wider exhaust outlets.

I expect that my motor is demanding more amps than my esc can deliver and that it could fail any day so I ordered the 180a Seaking. I also upgraded all my connections, series connecter and wiring to 10 gauge. The esc worked fine initially on 4s and I could tell there was more burst from the same batteries. After running 4s for a few mins I switched to 5s. The first pass was AMAZING! I could not believe the additional power the motor put out, but before I could even do my second pass the esc cut to half power. I brought the boat in and checked temps. The esc and motor were barely warm. I checked voltages and they were close to 4 volts. My lvc was set at 3.4

I had the esc reprogramed just in case and I checked the timing and lvc to make sure they were set right. Second try, same thing. Tried a different battery (5s 25c 4200 mah), same thing 1 pass and it cut. Went back to 4s and that didn’t work, neither did 3s. I put my Seaking 120a back in the boat and it has been running fine for the last several times out. Maybe I should be content there but with the additional power I saw out of the 180a I want to keep trying. I sent the 180a back and Steven tested it running 100amps for 10 seconds with no issue.

What do you all think defective esc? Try a different brand? I expect some comments that my KV is too high but I tried to see if the esc would work on the 2050kv and 2450kv, no dice. Any help would be appreciated!

Try and turn off LVC on the 180a and see what it does I have 4 of them and they can be picky depending on what batteries are hooked to it

After trial and error I returned the 180a. If it happens on the next one I could try that. I guess I was looking for suggestions on an alternative but that esc should have been a good choice.

I am looking at the OSE Raider 150, Turn 180, Swordfish 220a and any other suggested esc's. Keep in mind my current set up listed in my original post but I am also considering changing motors to the leopard 4074 1800kv. Also thinking about a TP 3640 1935KV.

Raider 150 would probably be the most practical option

Perfectly normal on these esc, this is a well known problem. They have an over sensitive lvc, most disable the lvc & time their runs. Low c batteries also don't help with this problem but sometimes high c batteries also has the lvc cut in.

That's good to know. When Steven said that could to be the issue I was scratching my head. But to hear it is a well known problem sets me at ease. I just ordered the OSE raider 150. I'm sure that will do me just fine. Also ordered a 5s battery that's 70-140c and the leopard 4074 1800kv. I think that will be on the edge of the raider 150a capabilities. What do you guys think?

I also think this BJ 24 is gonna be nuts!

I went with the Raider 150 and am very pleased! I'm running a Leo 4074 1800kv on 6s and it comes in cool every time. Boat is a freaking rocket too. Thanks for the advice.

Good to hear. I am planning on picking one of them up eventually.
