using a boat ESE in a car

I have been thinking about using a swordfish 200 8S and making some kind of heat sink and fan to cool it what do you guys think we are going to power up a XO-1 1650 KV I would think the marine ESC are better built thanks chris

Chris what "S" count are you going to run it on? I remember I used to run my Erevo Brushless with a T180 and it worked like a charm, unless you're running over 6s I suggest the T180 as I think its a more reliable unit lol... but that's just my opinion... if you're running 8s on that 1650kv you will be pulling some real amps even in a car, as it is a Large car. Nice part of the T180 is it has a bec that I myself have never had a issue using even on 6s, well actually wayyyyyy back on the first version t180 I did smoke a bec in a t180 but the esc still operated if I hooked up aux rxr power.

So long story short before you sell that T180 in your meanie, rip it out and put in the XO-1... you could get elaborate and using a copper cooling tube with a fan as I did at one point but it was mostly for looks lol, I always thought if I could devise a small "box" to hold water/ice cubes, and have a pump push the water through the esc and motor, would work for short runs when you know you're pushing the edge :) but the weight penalty and pia of it would probably not be worth it.

Hey Jason going at some point run 8S but for the most part it will be 6s and under I was thinking about the swordfish 200 the amp, ? Amp draw on the car is alot less then the boats Im going to put my set up on the computer and see what it is drawing now different car but just for reference

Got ya Chris, and I agree the amp draw is less... but 8s on those Xo-1's is going to be a lot still, I actually like the T180's throttle modulation better is also a reason... does the swordy have decent braking ability would also be a concern, if I remember correct my t180 worked well on that end too.

Hobbywing has a new car esc rated at 8s now, have you seen that one... it is shaped like a Mamba Monster instead of a long unit like the current 8s car escs too... something to consider, but you likely have already seen that one...

Sounds like a real can of worms,---- but hey, I'm in
Soooo, that ESC doesn't have a BEC, so you will need an RX, servo battery. Most fans are 12 volt, can you see the problem here? Do you have any heat sinks? CNC?
The ESC is aprox. 4x2x1, with a heat sink, and fan that 1" would become 2", do you have the room? You could use the Castle BEC, AND its link. The small one is only good for 6s, (I use one on my Summit, Castle 2200kv 4s). The BIGGER Castle BEC is good for 12s, again room? Down in my basement I have A LOT of salvaged computer parts, perhaps a 5 volt chipset fan, and heatsink would work? You would be best to remove the water block for best air cooling, warranty? Do you have artic silver epoxy?
Gosh I'm starting to sound like a real debbie downer, sorry.

Oh sure, just waltz in here and tease us with how you plan on slicing, dicing, breaking, burning, crashing, and blowing stuff up, and then just walk away.

It has been done a lot in the past for SAWs builds and 1/5 scales, there was a time when there were no high current or high amp car ESCs available at a reasonable price so Castle Baraccudas were pretty popular.

I don't know of any boat ESCs with programmable brakes other than you can program them to have brakes or not, which was not a big deal at the time as those cars were all converted IC cars (and still are for the most part), so you could just use the disc brakes they came with and retain proportional control. These days I would just use a Mamba XL and take the brakes out.

If you try to use boat ESC brakes in a car they will be plenty strong enough and then some (my brakes are all set to between 30-50% at full), but you will have no proportional control, touching the brakes will result in a instant lock up of all the driven wheels and quite possibly a crash.
