    Swordfish timing fyi

Setting up a swordfish 300 lite just now. Noticed something. I have a 1527 1.5d 1500kv neu. Set timing at 2 degrees. Motor plugs got warm under a few trigger pulls. Running it on 4s on the bench to set up. Then I pulled a datalog. Amp draw was 40 something Amps, rpm was 19,xxx which was a few thousand off from the voltage that it was showing. Should be around 22,500. Change timing to auto. Plugs no longer get warm. Run data log. Max amp draw was 9.4a. Max rpm is now 22,885. Hmmmm. Just giving you guys a heads up to try auto timing. Maybe I should try it at 0. Last time I did that with another boat it didn't do well but I'll do it.

I also remember my Daytona was a lot slower until I put it on auto.

      Thanks for sharing the info.

My friends Aeromarine Titan - 1521 1.5d SF 220 on auto runs 20 degrees hotter than when the timing is at 2 degrees.

My Cyberstorm - 1521 1.5d SF 220 with 2 degrees timing runs 10-15 degrees hotter than when running auto timing.

Both running the same prop, my Cyberstorm has about 2-3 mph advantage in speed running auto timing.

Both running 2 degrees timing my Cyberstorm is 1 mph slower.

Definitely worth playing with the timing.

Last time I tried 0 degrees on a d wind it didn't work as well as auto timing either.

I've run set timing, then tried auto last year and again this year on the kbb45 and saw no major differences personally. There are so many variables when it comes to timing, and I would love to know exactly how and based on what the sf applies the timing in auto, but nobody seems to know. When we set a specific timing, it is for the motor under load, so outside of that scenario one would think it would lose efficiency. With my cars, there is so much more we can set for how and when timing is applied, so it's probably only a matter of time before some of those features carry over. For example, on the 1/10 motors you can set static timing by rotating the endbell, and it applies the timing across the whole range of rpm continuously much like when we set a specific timing, but on top of that my Tekin esc allow me to set an amount of timing, say 25 deg, and the rpm range in which it will be applied, say 2,000 to 20,000, and that 25 deg will be applied incrementally over that range, 0 deg at 1,999 rpm ramping up to the full 25 deg at 20,000 rpm. We also have "boost" for the long straights, which will ad even more timing incrementally, starting at a set duration that full throttle is recognized. This may not all be as significant with some boating applications, but I would imagine it would open up a whole new world of tuning, especially for SAW guys. I'll have to post a pic of the computer screen next time I hook one of my cars up. Oh, and the Gen2 Tekin Hotwire software also has an Android app, so all this can be done by pligging it in to your phone.......

Timing will depend on the motor and the load you place on it. Unloaded testing is for the most part irrelevant.
That's not to say that auto timing doesn't work better on your motor; it may. You will really only know by testing it under load though.

Maybe. But, in the two d wind neu motors I've run sf on, they did not like fixed timing. One was extremely evident by the lack of speed, 39mph...6s, 1521 neu 1860kv. Put the timing at auto and things were a lot cooler and the boat was a good bit faster. I can't remember how much faster but even bench testing it with fixed timing the motor sounded lazy. Put on auto and it revved a lot faster. The data logs showed a big difference in rpm also when I ran the boat in the water. I didn't post this before because that was only one Esc, I figured it may have been a fluke, I don't feel like it was now.
