Ever had an esc just die?

Went ran some boats today. I struggled with tuning in on my Rivercat. Steadily got slower and slower. No matter what I did it would not go faster. Was running on 6s. The first pass was the fastest at like 79.8. It usually runs around 83 to 85. It got as low as 74. Fresh batteries and I even had two brand new pairs of batteries I tried. So then I put 7s in it. It only went 89. After fine tuning it again I got 91 out of it. Then the water became glass smooth. Wind died down. So I decided to try 8s one more time. (The first and last time I did it I flipped it and bent the rudder and steering rod). Plugged batteries in. I noticed it didn't do any cell beeping. (Seaking 180 hacked) I blipped the throttle, check. Turned steering, check. Threw in the water....nothing. Dead. Sterring worked. Brought it in, switch back to lower cells, still no motor beeps. Hmmm. Could the esc just being on its last leg and on the way out...maybe why it slowed? It burned up the bec long ago and I have many many 80+mph and 90+mph passes on it. A lot of it using 7s. I know it's not made for it. Guess it's time to get an hv esc. Just wondering if anyone has had one just stop working. And I like to tell stories. Hahaha.

Wow, Travis, you got your money's worth on that one....
The only time that I had one just stopped working was a Seaking 120 which I ran with 6s, it quietly stopped with no signs of burns or any smell....
Too many boats, not enough time...

That's exactly what this one did. I'm taking it all apart as I type this. Checked the motor with my checker, it's fine. Checks in at 1900kv. I did definitely get my money's worth! Last much longer than expected! I wish I knew exactly what kind of run time it has on it.

Well I took it all apart. It appeared to have a slight amount of moisture in the fet area. Guess I need a different sealant. I'm in the process of putting another one together. Didn't smell burnt tho. Guess that's a good thing it didn't smell up my boat as its about to go up for sale. I'm glad this happened now too! Make me look bad had it gone out after I sold it to someone. Now it will have a brand new esc and a new motor.

Lol. These esc's are supposed to be sealed from the factory the way it's made. I am epoxy coating the new one however.....just in case.

Well I changed it out. Wasn't the motor or anything else. Guess the esc didn't like 8s hahaha. I knew better. Won't try that again. I put a brand new one in it, hopefully pick up some speed now if the other one was crippled.

If there is no burnt smell & all the fets look ok, it would most probably be either be the capacitors have gone open circuit, or the little processor chip on the brains board has failed.
If the caps aren't bulged or oozing brown stuff, it's probably not them.
See the danger. THEN DO IT ANYWAY!!!

I have had 2 Castle ESCs die for no apparent reason, one brand new one died with a bang on very first plug in, and another died silently just after plug in having worked fine the day before, I gave it a quick blip to check it worked, walked to the pontoon, gave it another blip and nothing, no smoke, no bang, I tried again another day with the same result, 1 blip and it seems fine, but a second blip gets no response.

i had a castle ice 240 quit on me but it had a drop or two of water. I'm going to try another castle controller, this time will be water proofed.

Went ran again today. Wanted to update this. Evidently there was an issue with the esc. No matter what I did with it, it would not run in the 80's as it usually does on 6s. Put a new esc in it, no other changes, 81.3mph. It didn't sound like it was struggling anymore either. I guess it was just on the way out.

I had one of the dirt cheap HK no name escs fail as soon as power was put to it. Not a Hifei or Hobbywing. That one died on the bench. probably shorted out on the cooling block. Didn't know a thing about electric back then.
Over amped some, lost the caps on another. Replaced those, was the original aquacraft 45 amp in my SV. It's still going strong with a 2030 AQ motor in the SV.
Don't know how many servos I've broken, most back when I was actively racing outboard nitro tunnel hulls, did lose a rudder servo in my JAE 12 nitro boat due to an amazing crash, stripped the gears out of that one and shoved the boom tube mounts right out of the right sponson.....
I would really hate to add up all the damages for all my rc pursuits, cars, boats and planes. Had to get out of cars, going through too many matched SCR nicad packs back then.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?
