Esc does not have a built in bec and I am using a rx battery pack. Do I still need to remove red wire from esc connector at rx?
Also is it ok to shorten battery leads on esc?

No you don't need to remove red wire on these and the wires can be shortened. But remember that they are easy to shorten but harder to lengthen.I have three of these controllers and they are great.
