Battery storage-Fire Cabinet

Guys,

I just want to reiterate how important it is to properly store batteries in some type of fireproof container, if nothing else to prevent a possible lipo fire from spreading. I recently purchased a small benchtop fire safe cabinet for around $300 which can hold plenty of lipos. This fits nicely under a table or workbench and should safely store your lipos. Yes $300 is pretty expensive, but so are your other possessions and people. Cheap insurance in my view.

I have about 30 batteries in here for reference and could at least fit 30 more. Just want to share a possible option for those of your considering getting something.

It is supposed to. I have all but one vent closed, the open vent is piped through a steel spark arrester and away from everything else.

UMM that is to keep fire out I really wonder if two or more of those batteries go off if it will hold everything in. i doubt it Have you ever watched the videos of small battery tests they have done on the airplane forums?

I know what you are mentioning. I am more concerned with containing the fire inside the box and not letting it spread. It is 100% guaranteed No, is it better than storing them in a toolbox or other simple container, Yes. I am not saying it's perfect, but short of building a cinder brick bunker 100' from my house it is an improvement.

Tim, I bought mine from McMaster but you can get them at most industrial supply chains like Grainger, etc.

Way better than a lipo bag. I have had to kill off a few lipos before due to major swelling. Very uneasy feeling.

I had to get a fire safe for my batteries. Can't risk my dog.

I attended a seminar where the speaker was from a company that made battery storage chambers. They were much bigger deals than what we're handling. Think 10000 lithium Ion cells in a room. Like PAGS house. haha

They had automated extinguishing systems built in to the chambers. Special flame retardant epoxy coatings on the interiors. Very cool.

We talked about building a smaller version for the hobby guys but the cost escalated pretty quickly. Heck, we can't guys to spring for a decent radio. Most aren't going to pay thousands for a lipo bunker.

Tyler's box is better than most anybody is doing. If I know him at all, he stores a gaggle of cells all the time. Unless he has 12 storage bins they're all in one place too. If they all become involved at once the cabinet wont contain them. I don't think that's totally his plan though. Slow it down the best he can and hope for the best.

The vast majority of us wont have a lipo fire. That's no reason to pretend the risk isn't real though. I design fire protection systems (sprinklers, hose systems, fire pumps) that with any luck will never have to do their job.

If Tyler ever has a fire, he'll be better prepared than most for it.
