In my 10S2P shovel nose I use a separate battery because it's about 24" from the ESC.

I use both. I use a 2 cell or 3 cell small lipo like a 1800mah - 2000mah and a Ubec. I don't like taking power from the main power leads as I find it harder to make it look neat and tidy but, that's just me. I wire the Ubecs directly to the switch to avoid so many connector fail points.

Like I posted before, this new toy is cool but, doesn't mount nicely to the outside of a hull: UBEC WITH SWITCH

I don't like the added weight of another battery. I also don't like the fact that soonerof later your going to forget to recharge your receiver pack and it's gonna go dead on you at just the right (wrong) time, out in the middle of the lake. So....to me it's just one more thing to worry with. I like things simple and reliable as possible. I buy high quality, thick gauge servo wire and the pins and connectors and make my own extensions when components are far away. I tie into the positive and negative at the esc, run that power to my bec mounted close to my receiver. This way your sending full power to the bec and you only have the short wires coming out the bec carrying the lower voltage. Works great for me this way.

Just wondering why your signature only lists small boats. The boat I was talking about is 57" long with a 24" beam.

Not quite sure what that has to do with answering the question? In my Daytona the way the wires are run (in an effort to hide them) the wires are about 20-22" long, so I think it's relavent to his question. Am I not "qualified" to answer because the boats in my signature are small? If so, I didn't see a rule book stating that. Do I have to have IMPBA or NAMBA listed in my signature to answer a question? Thought this was an open forum and anyone can offer help or their opinion?

Depending on the brand of radio you run you may be able to switch to a high voltage servo and use a 2s lipo to power the rx and servo without any bec, pretty easy and quick to charge a small 2s lipo at the pond if you forget to at home.
You are completely safe doing this with a Spektrum Rx. They are rated to 9.6v. Don't have a clue about any others, my Futaba stuff is all old outdated AM. I fly and boat Spektrum now I have done this in a plane, my boats are all 4s setups so not required.....use the built in bec for those.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I was just wondering as many folks offer advice without the experience to back up what they say.

Sorry guys if I'm missing something, but in this specific situation, wasn't the question around running a battery or bec to the receiver? What difference would it make as to the size of the boat?

Agreed! Guess that's why I got a little offended. I feel like I'm more than experienced enough to answer this question.

This is another one of those personal preference deals Keith.
The only boats I use the bec in are my "limited" class race boats & ubecs are something else to fail IME. I would never trust a bec or ubec with my high $$$ boats. LiFe batteries have served me well.

Use what works for you in your "toy boat".
