    Hyperion Battery Failure

    I have (7) seven Hyperion 3S 11.1V 45/90C 5000mah batteries.
    These batteries worked great when they were new but shortly after a few runs the batteries go hot and started to loose their capacity
    I regret to admit that all these batteries have gotten puffy and cannot run the boat over two laps.
    I am running a Leopard motors in a couple of boats.
    I have tried using the hyperions in a smaller motor with the same results.
    This has gotten very frustrating and expensive. Does anyone have information on what I am doing wrong.?

    I am running Leopard 4082 Motor 1600kv.
    I am using the Leopard 180 Version 3 Esc.

    Does anyone know why I puffed the Hyperion batteries and what kind of battery can be used to run this leopard motor. ?

    Better question

    How long of a run do you make with your boat ?
    When you recharge your battery how much did it take to charge ?

    Your batteries are 5000 were you putting more than 4000 back in them to get them fully charged ??

        Mostly Used Traxxas Spartan and once in Modified Seaducer for electric with the same motor and esc set up, Running in series for (6S) using EC-5 connectors and 10 GU wire

          We run about 10 laps and I usually brought the boat back in before the ESC would call low voltage.
          Yes they are cooled off and then fully charged and occasionally balanced charge.
          at 5.0 amp rate .

            That Batteries come out pretty warm after a run, ,about 102- 105 Deg*F
            Maybe they are getting overheated within the enclosure.
            I tried to cool them off after immeadiately after a run.
            I thought this may have caused the first couple of battery failures.
            I took several precautions and tried to keep batteries from loosing integrity but all my efforts were for not the rest of the batteries are in the same condition now.

              I lost over $700 Seven hundred dollars in Hyperion Batteries

                What prop. 10 laps on what size course? Do you have any idea of amp draw?

                    Clearly the OP is doing something wrong, I just can't believe he had sevan faulty packs at the same time. Causes of cell failure include:

                    - Over-discharging. This means never below 3.5 volts per cell resting voltage. A default LVC of 3.0 volts is TOO LOW. Never discharge below 20% remaining capacity.
                    - Over-heating. Too high of an amp draw or running too lon = heat builds up. What is a safe amp draw for 2 minutes may not be for 4 minutes. (BTW 105*F is just starting to get warm.....not anywhere near too hot.)
                    - Over-charging. Too high of a charge rate will shorten cell life. A 1C charge rate is always fine.
                    - Poor balance. Some packs may require balancing every charge, some do not. ALWAYS check balance before charging.
                    - Storing at full voltage. This can reduce capacity and can cause puffing. Store at 3.85-3.90 volts per cell.
                    - Inadvertant shorting. Plugging the pack leads together will cause sparks, can damage some packs internally.

                    Puffing is almost always caused by overheating the cells. Excessive cell temperatures cause cracks in the electrodes allowing the electrolyte to react with the surface releasing gas, which causes the swelling.

                      How much did it take to recharge them ????

                      If you were putting more than 4000 back in them that is your problem you drained them too low
