After 20+ Years, I'm back in... MRP Miss Budweiser, battery options/suggestions???

I was into Nitro Outboard Tunnels when I was a kid and have recently been wanting another boat. So I scored a basically new MRP Miss Budweiser, had my eyes on them since they were introduced. But with all the new technology out there I am a little clueless on battery and charger selection. I would like to get this beauty in the water ASAP. I had also done my fair share of ON & Off road RC car racing and do recognize some battery and charger brands. Research suggests 7.2v 6C batteries and the boat has Tamyia plugs and the standard electrics.

I am going to be getting into some newer electric aircraft in the near future, they run brushless and lipo's, so I would like to get a multipurpose charger if need be. I would also like something I can charge from home and in the field. But don't know if I can run lipo's in this particular boat.

I don't want to break the bank on any of this stuff, but I don't want to waste my money on garbage either. I am not opposed to used stuff either if any of you have something that might work, please let me know.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I'm diggin the forum here thus far!

Hey, Right on. You sound like me three years back. I have the same hull here, bare mind you. My old running mate still has his as well. Lipo will run fine in place of NiCd. Just have to watch how long you run as the old gear won't have a LVC (low voltage control). You can't run lipos down past 3 volts per cell and I actually don't take mine down past 3.75. That is when you notice the first bit of a slowdown.

I can check in for tips and pointers to give you as I started back in the hobby with no clue about lipo and for the first while learned the hard way.

      Hi,
Nice scale looking Hydro you have there.
The blue Turnigy 30/40c or 40c packs are good sport running packs,
And will not break the back.
Hear some links with lots of info for you to learn from.
Also hears something I just picked up to use for a back up LVC when timing my runs,
Because on some esc the LVC is to sensitive and kicks in to early.
I still need to do some testing to see how good they are for that purpose.

Good connectors for the whole setup and a good price to.

And you may want to make up a set or two of these for parallel running cell packs.

Also when I just got into the hobby in 2010,
I read this thread that Wizard122 posted for this charger and it still working good.

I also had the same boat when I first got into electric (before brushless was the in thing)
I ended up having to split the hull apart (top from bottom) as there was a web for support that went across the boat that made it imposible to move the battery far enough ahead so I could cut it out to get the boat to balance right
There is very little room to get a lipo in past the motor on each side but it can be done
You will only be able to get a 2S lipo on each side
I have some pictures but did not take any when it was split apart

Thanks for your help, good to be back in the hobby and glad to hear about others out there running!!! What lipo packs are you using? What are your average run times? Stock motors? Mine are labelled Wizzard MS-2.

As far as low voltage, I guess some of the earlier boats controlled the radio via the packs, but mine has a standalone pack for the radio if that's what you were getting at. I would prefer not to mod the boat AT ALL, just due to the nature of the boat's age and "eclectic" value.

Gotcha, I looked down in there and seems VERY tight indeed. I would prefer to keep the boat stock, just looking for optimal run times and not to melt a hole in the hull. This is my very first hydro where I've had to keep COG's in mind. My others were just nasty fast OB's with a trim screw.

My boat must have been an older one
It had sponsons at the back also but I ended up cutting them off to reduce the drag
It also came with a red plastic prop and a white plastic rudder
I made my own motor mout and used the 4 holes that held the original gear set up
Originally it came with a solid straight shaft but I got a wire drive for it so I could flaten out the angle at the prop some
You can see in the fouth picture where the rudder used to be mounted
I just put 3 screws back in the same holes and used the 4th for the rod to run my new rudder set up

The motor is mounted as far forward as I could get it and my radio and speed controller and servo were kept in the original radio box section
There is not enough room in this boat to get enough of the weight far enough ahead without moving that bulk head
I even taped some weight on the tips of the sponsons

Because you do not have the rear sponsons you should be able to do all the same things by just unbolting the twin motor set up and make a new motor mount with out carving up the original look of your boat

Yes I did get my boat running on the twin motor set up first but that did not last long before I wanted to go faster :)

Hey, thanks for the pics and info, greatly appreciated and nice setup!!! She might be slower, remembering my nitro days and going to old school electric, but my pond is rather small, so it should make it exiting, lol...

OK, so I decided to keep it oldschool and picked up 2 Venom 3300 packs for this boat, for now. I am looking at some other boats that are lipo ready and want to get a charger to suit multi-chemistry that is relatively quick at charging.

I've got a few chargers in mind, the Turnigy 8150, Dynamite Passport 150W, and some dual chargers like the Hitec X2-400 or X2-200. Anyone had experience with any of these other than suggested by Lenny?

I would like to charge the packs simultaneously, and would probably pick up 2 of the smaller ones, but the convenience of the all-in-one seems appealing. Budget is also in mind, not looking to spend over $200 for chargers and supply, and do not mind lightly used. Heard one small review on the Hitec is that it is LOUD. Any other info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
