tony, do you put 3/32 risers under the plywood tray and do you coat with epoxy before or after install. also, do you sand both surfaces flat before bonding? thanks
Silicone likes good flat hard surfaces to bond to. You can scuff first before gluing but, I've never had a problem with my P mono battery tray for years, DF33.
If you have bare wood, I would seal it with epoxy first. Use a nice thick bead below and smaller on top to look nice.
I was pondering this myself this morning' . Rather than buy cf or fiberglass trays again, I ran to the local Homer Depot and picked up some supplies to build some more. I guess I'll post a how-to battery tray thread for the new guys have been showing up lately
In my apparition I made solid CF battery trays with 2 inch wide Velcro cut to fit I have some that is used for dog harnesses and a 10mm x 3mm by 400 long aluminium flat bar bend in to a bow shape to slide between the batteries and the tray to lift them out, I have had some good blow overs at 110khp and my batteries haven't moved.
In my hydro. I use a full length piece, the length of the battery, one on each side. Places correctly for balance. They wont come loose, even in a blow over. You must use a cc or something to release the battery from the velcro. Just trying to pull off the battery, it wont come off. I will say, there some velcros that work better than others. I just dont use the tray and strap down way. In some boats, I do see where a tray and strapping down would be a better option though. I've had no problems with this way, or batteries coming loose in almost 20 years of fe boats. Even with some wild blow overs.
