seperating lipo cells, weird thermal glue help needed

Recently puffed a 6s 40c pack because I was having too much fun, one cell dropped a little low and puffed a bit. I have another zippy 6s 40c one cell also puffed. Decided enough is enough I'm learning how to fix these things.

I noticed holding the tabs together is some sort of thermal glue that obviously conducts so all packs are in series, thing is what the heck is it and where can I get some? I don't have the guts to solder the tabs and would like to stick to glue. I know I'm very much on my own as this is risky but I have both packs apart just need to glue a cell into place. Thanks guys.

I really doubt the glue you are seeing in for making connections, it is most likely just hot glue and used as in insulator. I have taken apart a few batteries . Most recently I took a punctured cell out of a 2200 Mah 4 s pack and turned it into a 3 s pack.

I made a video a while back with a 5000 Mah pack that I accidentally sort circuited and burned a tab off one of the cells. I had another matching cell so I just replaced it and made it back to a 4 s pack but I made a lil video on how to turn it to 3 cell cause someone was asking about it back then. Here is the link http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SO1gjtnHQ6M&feature=relmfu. The video is somewhat crude but its what I did. I wouldn't suggest using a wire as a bridge like I do in the video but rather connect tab to tab.

Use a volt meter, take your time , have a plan if a cell starts to puff and vent, wear eye protection, and proceed at your own risk. Many would say its foolish to even mess with them, they would say just toss it. However, if you have an idea of how they work its not all that scary, no more dangerous then connecting bullets

There's solder tab connections only at the cable end of the pack. You'll see them once you get in there. Insulate exposed tabs youre not soldering with thick tape. You'll need a high-output gun or industrial iron to solder the tabs, as they are typically quite large and will pull heat away from a small iron faster than it can melt the solder.

The cells are held together with two-sided tape. They're difficult to separate without damaging them. Do not pry with any tools, it will damage the cells. Instead, drip a couple of drops of acetone between the cells to soften the tape adhesive. Be patient. Gently lift, drip more acetone, wait a minute, lift gently, drip more, etc.

Yep, the acetone trick is how I do it.

Awesome thanks guys. Cheap zippy cells managed to seperate but I destroyed a tab in the process. Anyway used my 6mm chisel tip and soldered it back together. Not really as scary as I thought it would be as you're working with one 3.7volt cell for most of the process. The pack balanced perfectly and I have put one run through it so far so good.

Yes it is good to know what makes them tick,
That is how I learned how to fix them to,
Just one step at a time.
            Good luck with it.

Usually the internal tab is aluminum, and welded to a nickel tab for soldering. Most of the time, when the end of the tab breaks off, there's nothing viable to solder onto.

Destroyed a tab but luckily only on the dead cell! I was weary to give this a try hopefully it stays together.
