I'm looking to convert a 1/8 gas hydro into FE so it's relatively high amp draw. I wanted to purchase sports battery packs 4S 4000/5000mAh lipos for boat use but also could go into a few of my cars/planes. I was looking at Gen Ace & Sky Lipo packs but noticed they only use 12 gauge wires. Is that a suitable size for bigger FE boats? The batteries themselves seem to have good reviews. I know Turnigy brands and others that HK sells is an option as well. Thoughts?

I've used both Gen Ace and Turnigy but ONLY in my spec-powered rigs. For your 1/8 scale conversion, which you correctly identify as a high amp draw application, go with these :
I've already had one Class win and one NAMBA SAW record with these without having to break the bank.2008 NAMBA P-Mono & P-Offshore Nat'l 2-Lap Record Holder; '15 P-Cat, P-Ltd Cat 2-Lap

So would I need that high of a cell rating for this project (65C)? From the reviews I've read, Gen Ace seems to be under rated compared to Sky Lipo. In addition, the 8 gauge wires that Turnigy uses is a noticeable difference than 12 gauge I would assume. Can the 12 gauge wires handle the occasional 200A spikes? Or is this just asking for failure?
I know quite a few on this forum have used HobbyKing brand lipos to power big projects (45"-50") for sport runs. Haven't heard the same for Gen Ace/Sky Lipo/Blue Lipo that all appears to use lower gauge wires. I also know you get what you pay for and I have no doubt some guys on here spend a couple grand on lipos alone. I'm nowhere near that league of spending but do want to enjoy running larger hulls for sport. If I can get by a few seasons with budget packs knowing an occasional few may not last, I'll be happy. I'm sure once I catch the addiction, I'll end up like the rest of you.Comment

Chuck, my 4S 5000's have 10 gauge leads. At WWVIII I used them for P-Mono; finished all six heats with no hot leads using a big 3-blade.
Must say that since I compete in seven classes (since retiring from OPC for now), I really like these new packs. I wince a little when I economize using Gen Ace & Turnigy 'cause their slight voltage drop under load handicaps me some (like my driving), and wince more forking out the $$ for TP & Hyperion. The Dinogys have been the solution for me, especially with the Nat's coming up in June and the fleet needs to be in top competative shape.2008 NAMBA P-Mono & P-Offshore Nat'l 2-Lap Record Holder; '15 P-Cat, P-Ltd Cat 2-Lap

As far as wire gauge is concerned, I've found as of late that connector size is a very important variable. Since switching to 8mm from 5.5 on my high amp-draw rigs, everything on the battery end runs cooler. If the connections between the batteries & speedy don't create a roadblock, the wires dont get as hot. For reference, my premie TP and Hyperion 4S 5000's both use 10 gauge.
In the picture, left to right, are the wires on 4S 5000 TP, Hyp, and Dinogy. The Dinogy wires have thicker insulation 'tho I can't say from an empirical point of view if that is an indication of an advantage but it seems so. Given that the markings on all three say 200C [ 392 deg F] the insulation is well up to the task on all of them. Bottom line, as has been discussed ad infinitum in cooling threads, a proper(chopper) and well balanced setup shouldn't create probs anywhere along the power train

Thanks for the words Tony. Guys my web site is up but not quite complete. I have 4s 5000 in stock but I'm getting ready to order all the other sizes people have been wanting. You can check it out and email me any questions you might have. The site is
