Charge em and run em'.. I don't think there's a formal break in process.

This question was asked in the Battery and Charger section.

        http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...-new-batteries

This quoted from Hyperion web site. "Break-In Procedure - Hyperion G3 LiPo are robust and do not need a complicated break-in procedure. We recommend that the first 5 uses are limited to 3C charge rates, and that pilots use throttle management to avoid long periods of max-rate discharge for those first 5 flights. Note also the other care suggestions below. Those apply pretty generally to any LiPo pack, not just Hyperion G3..."

I set my charger to balance charge at 1C then discharge at 4 amps to 3.85 volts per cell for 5 cycles for new packs. Others may have different opinions but sounds to me that taking it easy on the packs for 5 cycles will give the packs longer life and performance.

A source I trust completely tested two identical packs, one with a break-in and the other without. The un-broken in pack gave full power right away, the broken-in pack took 6-8 cycles to give full power. That's the good news about skipping break-in. The bad news was that the un-broken in pack gave up at 2/3rds the number of cycles the broken-in pack took to reach the end of its life.

Admittedly just one test, but for my money having a pack last 33% longer is worth taking the short time needed to break-in a pack.

Interesting... Well i personally have never broken in a lipo. But then again all my lipos are turnigys from china so its not like I paid top dollar for them, if they last a year of good bashing im happy. I have been more than pleased with turnigy lipos. They are all i run, as well as all the guys I know and none of us have had a problem with them. And none of us have broken them in. Might be something to possibly consider if it will indeed add more charge cycles to the life of the lipos.

1.25 amps is fine for discharge. Also use an external balancer such as a Blinky to balance the cells out since if I remember that charger dosn't have an internal balancer.

What if you don't have a discharge option on your charger.
Whats a good way to discharge them??

                      Some soft runs maybe? Invest in a accucell 6 25 $ balance/charger/discharger

i just made a discharger and pulls about 5 amps ( mr16 75 watt lamp) on the 4s - is it not recommended to pull down past 80% on a heavy load or any load, 5 amps or 1.25 of the charger

What did you make it out of?
I have seen some which used car blinker lights.

Lots of people use a low voltage alarm and a light bulb, so they don't over discharge.
you could calculate a pretty specific time using the watts and voltage you are using, say 40 watts at 10 volts would be 4A (watts/volts=amps), on a 4000mah pack, discharge for about an hour, or a bit less.
I have never broken in a pack, but I will next time, I have two packs to break in, (2S and 3S) maybe i'll just use the series connector that they will use on the ESC and run it like a 5S pack.

Best to use a balanced discharge so all cells have equal dissipation of energy, conducive to stabilization of polymer.
Cheap balance (charger+)discharger for 20$ from HC will do this adequately.
