    Deans and High Amp ?

    Hi Guys,

just wandering what the max amps you would use deans on ?

I got to thinking about it on my build and thought i better ask before i screw up.

    here is the set up

    1518 1Y 1800KV
    4S2P 5000 mah 40C... in race trim it will be 5S2P 5050 mah 35C
    CC 240LV ESC
    M447 prop

I was planning on using the deans on battery side only, i do have 8mm bullets i bought form Neutronics that are going the motor connections...should i ditch the deans and just go with the bullets all around ?

    thanks,
    Giz.

Ditch the Deans for this application. You'll want 5.5mm bullets minimum.

I believe Deans are good for up to 60 amps.

Definitely ditch the deans. Here's some interesting info: http://www.elektromodellflug.de/hoch...romstecker.htm

I agree with Nautiboyz, 5.5mm AT LEAST.

Yeah, 60a/75a max. It's in the link I provided. The 8mm bullets will work great for your setup.

While the specs may say 60 amps, Deans will get very very hot at much lower amperage once they are even slightly worn. About all we can say positive about them is that they are better than Tamaya plugs, and that they are polarized. They were great in their day - the 1990s - but not today.

If you use gold bullet plugs make certain you have a plan for polarization, otherwise you WILL eventually plug them in backwards. The gold plugs are not perfect either, unless they are very tight they will have greater resistance than if tight; tightening them by bending the prongs does not automatically mean they are good. Not all gold plugs are the same, even with the same nominal size.

Jay, which way do you polarize your batteries with the bullet plugs? Thanks

Aren't there any bullets that have the heat resistant plastic around it which hold the plugs close together but allow for the low resistance and high current application?

The closest you will find are the e-Flite EC-5's...good to about 120A w/10 AWG wire.

Not to offend the above guys but considering you're running 2P config, Deans could be just fine. Just stay away from the Y type parallel adapter harness. The 240LV should have 2 pairs of battery wires and that's a good feature.

I run 6S 2P 5000mAh Turnigy and Hyperion packs in my DF CyberStorm, and 6S 4P in my HPR115 at 142km/h with zero problems. The motor wires get much hotter than the Deans which is just slightly warm.

My suggestions here is to stay away from genuine female Deans, use high quality clones instead. Yes I said the knock offs, but high quality knock offs, such as the ones sold at HobbyCity. The gold plated condutors will never have dark stain like the genuine Deans' silver tabs do. And the resin(nylon?) housing does endure high temperature than the genuine version.

I have said it before and I will say it again.
I use deans in my scale boats and my crawlers.

                      FE should use bullets.
4mm for my minis and 5.5 for all my other hulls

K.I.S.S. (keep it simple) I have gone to 8mm exclusively for all boats that use 5000ma and larger batteries, regardless of the configuration. They aren't that much larger, and can give you all the battery will provide without getting warm. You don't even want 'warm' - that is just potential motor energy that was turned into wasted heat energy. Why chance it - for a few grams less weight? No way.

For ease of operation and as your fleet grows decide on what size bullets you will use and change all your lipos over to it!

If go to bullets, remember to make them polarized. My buddy just killed his brand new seaking180 by a minor mistake after checked for tens of times.

Also, keep an eye on the tightness. Bullets get loose over time.

Or at least use red and black shrink tubing. That will help a lot.
