    540 11XL or 580 10L

I am torn between these two motors for my Titan 33" hull. I plan on being a sport runner that runs primarily on 4s but will occasionally throw in a 5s for *!***!***!***!**s and giggles. Let me know your opinions on which one to get.

Well you are looking at 2 completely different setups.

Both would be good choices but I think the 580L would move the hull better with the extra size and mass of the motor. However, the 10 turn with only push 19,500 rpm on 4s. thats a little slow. I would use that motor on at least 5, if not 6s...

      You'll want 6s for sure with a 580 10l !!

You could probably run the 580 8L and have better success on 4s and 5s.

Ok so the 8L will be my best bet to run on 4s and 5s? That sounds good. I just was looking for the added torque of the 580L over the 540XL.

Keep in mind that with the bigger can 580 you are talking a lot bigger power system. Its like comparing an upright vacuum to a shop vac, you will need to go 2P for sure and have at least 8000-9000 mah capacity total. You will need a larger ESC as well to handle the higher draw. If you go the XL can you can go 4-6S and still use a Hydra 120 (if you are conservative with your props). Only go 580 if you are looking for interstate speeds!

If you already have the XL and want to get rid of it, let me know - this is a great motor for this sized boat.

Well I planned on using the 580 8L with the Hobbyking 180A esc, and 4s2p 4000mah (8000mah total) for this set-up. Will that be ok?

Again, what props and what speeds are you craving? ESC sounds appropriate and capacity the bare minimum, but like was pointed out, you may be low on rpms with this 1650x 15V = 26K? You will need a big prop to get your speeds, this means big draw, which means short run times and hotter electronics.

I ran a neu 1515 1.5D (1900KV) in this sized hull and on 4S2P with an X448 prop she did mid 40s. you may be ok, especially if you go for 5-6S and smaller props. You might want to use voltage to get your speeds rather than prop size.

Do you have batteries yet? if not consider the Rhino packs at HobbyKing. You can get a pair of 2S and a pair of 3S 4900mah packs which will allow you to try different configurations (AND have the capacity of almost 10000 mah on 5S!!!!) all for about $150. you can also get bigger packs and for cheap. I will bet that motor will want higher voltage than 4S if you want 40+ mph. Just a guess though, have not run that motor.

Sounds good. I will order the 5s Zippy Li-Po packs then. The only reason why I am picking the 580L over the 540 XL is because I like the extra torque to push this boat which is fairly large in my opinion.
