DIY water cooling jacket from Neu 2230

    Edit: for Neu 2230, LOL

After getting $300 quote for machining proper water cooling jacket for my 2230, I tried getting unmachined aluminum pipe to slide over slightly thinner o-rings on my motor. It was too tight of a fit last time, even with oil I could not get that pipe to fit.

Last night I had an idea to freeze the motor and to heat the pipe with a torch to make the motor shrink a little and to expand the pipe. I've placed the motor in the freezer for 2 hours. Then I heated the pipe until motor oil that i spread inside of it started to smoke.

The pipe slid over the first o-ring like butter. At second o-ring pipe got stuck, and no amount of hammering could get it over - it just bounced back. I needed hydraulic press to apply constant force to get that second o-ring under the pipe. I used my drill press for the job. I put a piece of wood between the chuck and back of the motor and applied pressure. The o-ring compressed and quickly slid under the pipe.

Parts together cost me about $38 with enough pipe left over for 2 more jackets. I got the pipe here: http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant...d=71&top_cat=0

Now my bad boy is ready for some extra Amps!

You should not have to worry about being so tight. Using a smaller o-ring and then use some rtv sealant around that edge. There is not enough water pressure to blow anything off.

Also, put the o-ring in the freezer as well. Odd that one went on the the other did not...maybe the motor case is not exact as well.

Looks l ike you can add some prop to that baby...or volts :)

You can also have a machinist lathe the ID out a few .000 so the 0-ring will fit. Should not cost much for that.
